Surf etiquette, am I wrong?

Postby BaNZ » Fri Aug 05, 2022 6:35 pm

I was on the furthest break. Rode all the way in. Inside there was another smaller break, basically as soon as I got off the wave. I was another line up on the shoulder. First time surfing this spot so I didn't know that.

A girl was about to take off and even though she saw me, she was newish so she couldn't turn and ran me over. I got under the board to avoid impact. Our boards collided. I apologized and she also apologized.

I think we both are wrong? She saw me and she shouldve known I could not get out of her way in time. I'm also wrong because I should've been more aware that I was in another impact zone?

Sounds like miscommunication more than anything. If the boards are undamaged and everyone's happy, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just be aware that if you've just finished a ride, it's someone else's turn so where possible, move out of their way quickly.

How do you KNOW that she knew that you couldn’t get out of the way ?
Next time you’re riding the wave and a complete stranger blocks you and you collide with them, will you accept their words, “ why didn’t you turn to avoid me, you know I’m just learning ?”

Because I fell at the end of my ride and I wasn't on the surf board. I think we made eye contact for a few seconds as she was paddling for the wave.
