I'm using a 7'0 fin with the side bites.

This is a video of me taking off on the shoulder.

I don't recall my feet dragging in this video so probably isn't the best example.

Your foot is not sliding under, your board is sliding sideways and you are noticing the water on your foot before you eat it. Try bigger sidebites or a cutaway center fin, something that will allow you to turn harder without sliding the tail.

Yeah, normally I would not ride into the white water so the paddle out is easier.

Good, that would have been a waste to have to paddle all the way back. But you missed the opportunity to hit the on coming lip. You ran away / turned down when you should've gone up and meet force with force. Could've been a nice floater.

Nice ride! Seems to me you could paddle perpendicular for a second or more, kind of like a mini fade. This will solve the board cutting water problem. I like the "push upper body up while looking down the line", stylish move. Think Machado or Tudor in a video does this until hitting the bottom of the wave, then pops a huge bottom turn.

Sometimes what I would do on this spot is actually take off and go left to the pocket and turn around again. Providing that there is no one on the wave already. I probably didn't paddle more because I was really tired. I went out to the lineup and got pummeled hard when the bigger sets came in.

Didn't think I had the speed or skills to do that. In my mind I thought I surf better than what I saw on the video.

Say if I wanted to do a floater in that position, wouldn't I need more speed and say move my feet to the tail of the board to lift the nose up a little? I've developed my own way of moving on the board. I would actually hop instead of cross step. I haven't really push myself to train for cross step, but one of these days years I will conquer cross stepping.

In the words of Yoda, " and that is why you fail ". But more worse, you don't even try. How are you going to learn timing and positioning if you don't even try to hit the lip ? It's way inside and doesn't seem to be anyone in front for you to endanger if you fall off.

Weight shift back with just the shoulders or even a quick compression down of the torso and lift up to un-weight. You don't have time to cross-step and not needed anyways.
"Hop" ? Don't you think that will upset the flow of the board on the wave ? As Wingnut says, "Walk, never Shuffle". And Hopping is even worse than Shuffling.
