Surfing - Expensive!?

Do you surfing is too expensive? I mean ive spent hundreds on a wetsuit and board wheras other sports like skateboarding or football is much cheaper. I dont know a lot about the materials or time to create surfboards but do you really get your ull money worth for like a £400 surfboard? Do you think its expensive because its a 'cool' sport and they can make more money out of its name.
Im probably thinking too much but i was wondering why everything is so expensive, Anyone explain?

nope i think its pretty cheap, i spend almost 3 times as much on mountian biking than i do on surfing

I think surfing is one of the cheaper activities you can do.

Once you've made the initial outlay it's only the cost of getting to the beach and parking!

I bought a shortboard for £200 and a wetsuit for £80 and they both lasted 11 years - so that's £25 a year!

I don't think that's bad - you join a sports club and you'll be paying about that much a month!!

The kit isnt that expensive... or at least wouldnt be if I didnt keep getting tempted to buy new 'stuff'

Its the travelling thats the money-eater!

initial expenses can be a bit much - but on the other hand a lot goes into the making of the equipment, very hand tailored and personal. once you have the gear your set though.

unlike skiing/snowboarding...no lift ticket expenses.

like they all said its expensive at first but once u get the board and wetty u dont need anything else except wax which is like 50 cents

Cheap for me.

Roommate went back to Japan, leaving me two boards and a springsuit. I had to learn how to fix a few dings, but my biggest expense so far is buying a new winter suit, gas, and parking.

Compared to snowboarding or ice hockey, it's hella cheap. $30 bucks for a lift ticket, 1.8 hour drive to the resort, gas, food, Forget it! Don't even get me started on hockey equipment and league fees. Even the Martial Arts classes I took for 5 year straight coast $75 a month or how about the $40 per hour I pay for guitar lessons! Surfing is a blessing!

As everyone says, once you have your gear it's practically free!
And you don't HAVE to spend £400 on a new board. There are shops selling all in packages - wetsuit, board & leash for £200 these days. Admittedly it;s not the greatest kit in the world but it get's you in the water.

Like anything, you get what you pay for. If you want something that a guy has spent a week of his time hand-making then you have to pay for that.

I always compare costs to taking up Golf. You can easily spend £1000 or more on a set of golf clubs and equipment. You then have £250 a year just to be a member of a club plus various other bits and bobs. Over a 5-year period you'd probably spend £2500-£3000. On the other side, surfing is a one off hit of a fraction of that amount.

There are so many used boards to be had and seriously, you shouldn't be "learning" on an expensive board anyway. Your just going to beat the heck out of it, and as a beginner you don't even really know what kind of specs you want in a board.

It also gives you a certain sense of appreciation when you take a beat up board and use your own two hands to make it ship shape. If you buy an expensive board to learn on, you'll most likely baby it like people who buy Land Rovers and never take it off pavement.

im thinking that 100 punds on a skate board is pretty expensive, and thats just the bloody board. so no. and i reckon a skate board last less time than a surf board. on average. its all relative maaaaaan

you guys dont have reefs! i went through 3 fiberglass boards in 2 years! not i finally bought an epoxy and ive had it for a year, but ive spent 160 dollars on repairing it so far! (that includes the nose job for those of you who have read my other post)

skateboards arnt that much. i know here you can get a good deck for 40 dollars U.S.

skateboards are less there as they are imported to hear. unless you buy a uk board. i bought a powell in the mid 90s for 70 ponds so im thinking the cost has gone up now. but yeah you can get cheaper boards. like the old santa cruz everslick was around 70 to buy here.

i play ice hockey and spend thosand s every year .surfing is one off payment really then ur sorted.

ok i spent $865 on my surf board and i thin k its the cheapest sport i ever done its cheaper then paintball and sailing and motocross ect. i did many hobies and this is the cheapest

ugh... i think its expensive. but once u have ur summer suit, winter suit, and board... all that necessary to buy is wax. so at first its really expensive but its not ongoingly expensive unless you break or damage any equipment.. get where im commin from? i also do a lot of other sports , i find diving and rugby to be a lot more expensive:P

motocross is by far the most expensive sport ive ever done! thousands of pounds to get a bike, then all the gear, then maintaining the damn thing! surfing is cheap, fuel to get to it isnt!
