Hi Christo, Tasmania the entire East coast has numerous breaks that respond to the same weather systems that influence the East coast of the mainland, around Hobart you can head to the Tasman peninsula and get up to as extreme as Shipsterns Bluff if it is working, you can head out to Carlton beach and then further along South Arm, there is a Classic right Point which would have seen in one magazine or another, but you will have to look, much of this area is dependent on swells heading up the various parts of the Derwent river.
You can head down the west side of the derwent estuary and go to Bruny Island, there are breaks there and campsites, Australia‘s most southern break Cloudy Bay is there, spookiest place I’ve ever surfed, Plankton or Alge stains the water into blood red clouds and the bull kelp swirls across the water looking severely like great white fins, there are also seals, so it is a possibility.
Free camping is not favored but quite a lot of camp grounds at beaches!
Some nice waves to o at Betsy Island on South Arm
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷

Tasmania is a great place to do a surf trip, colder in winter and comfortable in summer!. Still all the dangerous wildlife,.
The east coast will kick some seriously good fun waves with swell from the whole range NE to,south , look at google earth and place your bets.
Winds are the difference between magic and tragic! South Arm out of Hobart has hidden gems, Clifton Beach and Betsy Island.
You can head to,Bruny Island, . You will need a seriously good 4x4 for some of the obscure places, the west coast definitely and your freeze your bits off serious surf, wild isolated and definitely life threatening if injured!

Great scenery, beer and food! Lots of miles and petrol costs!
