well ok i've been raised around the ocean a lot of my life never surfed but body surfed and body boarded and all that so no surfing experience so
0 but I can judge a wave and stuff so i have some basics lol

I'm a 5, although i've never surfed on a regular basis for more than 2 months... when there are waves, there are crowds, when the crowds leave the waves too, and sometimes the swell hits the beaches on workdays and it's totally flat on weekends =(

Hello everyone. I've lurked here awhile learning from everyone who posts here. Thank you for the good tips. You lot are far more friendly than every other surf forum I've visited.

I rate myself around 5 on this scale.

I've lived near the beach most my life, but all my attempts at surfing were frustrating. I've found that experienced surfers don't exactly make the best teachers. Since my daughter took up surfing two summers ago through a local surf camp, I decided to give it another go so I can be near her for safety.
I got hooked bad! I started surfing regularly at the beginning of summer, and have been surfing 3-5 days a week, mostly around the Huntington Beach/Bolsa Chica SoCal beachbreaks. Since I've started, I went down from a 7'4" to a 6'10" and now I'm on a 6'5" with occasional forays with a 6'1". I got most of my boards second hand and had to learn how to fix dings. I also suffered 4 staples from my own board bonking me in the head after a bad pearl.

I can catch waves and find the face, but anytime I want to break trim, I end up burying my rails.

I 'surfed' at Huntington once.

I was on hols in LA and we drove down to Huntington, I went into a couple of surf shops to rent a board. There were some pretty good boards, much better than you can rent in the UK, so I was pretty stoked...

... until I realised I'd left my Credit Card back in the motel room in Redondo beach, so the only thing they'd let me rent was a sponger with no leash!!

I paddled out (I was desperate- I don't get to surf in boardshorts often!!) caught a couple of waves, tried to turn, fell off and the board went ALL the way back to the beach. I swam after it, but then got p***d off and took it back.

Not the most successful trip ever!!
