Recommend a fin for a longboard

Postby BaNZ » Tue Oct 06, 2020 6:22 pm

I need something cheap for my Torq 9'0 board. I think it uses future fins? I don't know much about fins at all because I only use the fins that came with the board. Been wanting to get another set of fin for backup because I always forget them at home. I usually keep two sets of everything in my car for surfing, wetsuit, fin screws, screw driver, and leash. The only thing I don't have is another extra set of fin and a board. Last week I had to borrow a friends fin from a fishboard? It was only 6.5 inch and he advised that I need to put the side bite. I normally just surf with a single fin that is much longer than that. I have no idea about the dimensions.

With 2+1 on a 6.5" fin. Oddly enough, I didn't feel much drag resistance. In the past I always removed the side bite because I found it hard to turn or paddle. This time I felt my paddle was strong. However the turns was a different story. Once I popup and push the rails into the wave. It felt like my tail was out in the water, I didn't feel the drag that I normally do.

If you're just looking for a basic nylon spare to have around, the Dorsal fins are a decent price for a generic style fin.

Thanks this is perfect. I don't need $80 fins that is just going sit in the car for most of the time. I once went out with only side fins, that wasn't fun....

I don't think I can use fcs fins with a torq board?

https://www.surfnation.com.au/blogs/new ... ce%20versa.

The demerit is that the Futures fin system is not as popular with shapers as the FCS is which means your board options are a bit limited. You can't also use your FCS fins on boards with Futures fin boxes, vice versa.

Are you talking about a 6.5" center fin that you borrowed from your friend to put in the center box ?

Or you have a "Thruster" Futures Fins set up and somehow put a 6.5" fin in the center ?

Yes, I used a 6.5" center fin that I borrowed from a friend and added two side bites because he said I'll need it as the fin might be too small for my board. Actually I have no idea what brand is the fin.

The Torq website says my board uses future fin 2+1 setup. In my normal setup, I only use a single fin that comes with it and not use the side bite. I have no idea what the size is but it is definitely bigger than the 6.5" that I borrowed.

Then the FCS connect center fin will work.

( and conversely, Future Fins’ branded center fins will work in “standard” center boxes on boards equipped with FCS side bite boxes. )

They only have a 10". Is this way too big for a 9'0 board? The one on the left is the fin that came with the board.

The norm is inch for foot for a single. So for a 9 foot board you usually go with a 9 inch fin. But in your case, an 8 inch fin should be plenty. 10 inch is way too much.
