Fin advice

Postby Ollies » Tue Sep 15, 2020 9:45 am

Hi Everyone,
Hoping someone can recommend fins that fit a gap in what I currently have, going through the FCS website trying to compare dims but haven't really found what I'm looking for yet. I have mainly be using quads for the last couple of years on my higher volume/hybrid type boards, I just preferred how they felt compared to thruster setups I had tried. More recently in the smaller stuff this summer I have been using the MR 2+1 fins and loved them. But as the swells are getting bigger I'm finding them just that bit hard to control in bigger waves, the speed is awesome but would prefer just a bit more drag or control to get some more turns in instead of just rocketing down the line.
So, I started looking for something somewhere between standard thruster set up and the MR 2+1, something with the oversized side fins and smaller trailer fin but not quite as extreme as the MR 2+1, something a bit closer to thruster setup. Comparing to the 2+1 maybe slightly smaller sides and slightly bigger centre fin.
Does anyone know of any fins like this?
Thanks

With fins and fin systems, depending on the centre fin box or plugs you can go bigger with cutaways different foils.
You can experiment with a couple of sets of side fins that you think might suit your style ( which is why I don‘ t suggest individual, sets)
Read the fin prime I posted, about this sort of thing?
You also might thinkmabout flex. versus stiffness for your side bites!
Ask more and we can advise more! :D

Thanks Jaffa, sorry I should have saying it is the MR twin + stabaliser set up I was using. I was looking for something closer to the standard thruster set up for a bit more control in better waves. Maybe with smaller sides and larger stabiliser. I think I found a few sets eventually, dims strangely aren't on fcs website but they are on others. Looking at the machado twin + stabaliser or the firewire thrusters they look to be closer to what I was thinking. Maybe like you say I'll get some individual fins to tweek this set up either.

Have you tried using a 5th Finner (aka Nubster) with your quad setup?
I just started using a quad recently after only surfing a 3 fin thruster in the past.. The quad always felt too loose to me until I added the nubster and I felt like it added the stability I was looking for but still kept all the good qualities of the quad.

This is the one I use

There's also an unusual fin that I bought recently that works awesome as the center fin for a traditional Thruster setup. Its the CH425 fin from Futures. Theyre kinda hard to find but they work really well for giving a thruster the release of a quad but still has the hold of a Thruster in the pocket or on steeper waves. I think it works well with most side fins that have good rake.

Here's the CH425 fin. I forgot you don't have Futures boxes but maybe they have a similar design for FCS.

It's basically a shortboard version of the Hatchet fin used on longboards. I think fins with a large cutout on the back of the fin should work similar. This one does have a crazy foil that probably helps the functionality more, but the concept might be worth a try for similar fins.
