First Fish Board

Postby colonj10 » Sun Apr 19, 2020 12:03 am

Hey All,

I'm new here but looking for some sound advice on my next board... I have been surfing a 7' Rusty Big Cat (width: 2' , thickness: 2.75" , volume: 45.9) on Long Island for a few years now. I never got too comfortable with the board, I like to blame the size of it but then again it could just be my lack of getting out there. I would consider myself an intermediate surfer on the correct board, and I am in need of some advice on what I should be looking for. I heard a fish would be good for the waves here in NY.

Looking forward to hearing what you all have to say.

Do you find your current board difficult because you arent catching enough waves or because you dont feel its maneuverable enough? Are you wanting to get a shorter board or a board that is easier to surf/that you can catch more waves on?

People often say fish are 'good' for smaller waves because a fish is usually wider and thicker than other boards of a similar length. Thats great if you are surfing a 6'3 board, but if you are surfing 7ft+ boards the issues are different.
