I agree with waikikichan and it links into my earlier comment - you are leaning too far forward after the pop up, which is why you need to hold onto the rail; I suspect that is at least in part because of your leg/hand placement being the 'wrong' way around - and, thinking about it, you may only be able to get into that position because you are holding onto the rail.

In other words, you have a pop up that 'works' because you are adjusting something else to compensate for the errors that are created. But in doing so you have created another flaw...

Read this on a post in reddit, curious to hear your guy's thoughts on it?

"Absolutely rips" meaning he is advanced in his surfing technique. He is using skills way beyond the basics.

Look at Ronaldinho at what he does with a soccer ball, he rips.
Look at how Superbikers backs in the rear tires into a turn, they rip.
Look at how a Billard player makes the ball curve around or even hop over others, they rip.

If you are having problems with popping up and getting into the proper stance, his 100% weight bias on the front foot is not for you. Learn the basics first. ( and stop looking down at your hands and feet )

Plus he is probably on a HP shortboard and doesn't need to pick up his feet and more it around, unlike on a beginner friendly wide and stable long(er) board. If you put full weight on your front, it'll probably cause the nose to slap and stall you out. If the nose slaps, then you might panic and then you might shove your weight back onto your rear foot, causing Rock the Boat action, thus stalling the board again.
