Stuck at home during lock down watching Youtube how to improve your surfing videos.

This one was truly a shocking moment.
( start watching from the 1:32 mark )
I can imagine the amount of beginners with broken teeth after trying this.

She's also popping up into a parallel stance, teaching muscle memory the wrong movement. It's impressive, but clearly a very difficult progression taught without telling the audience how hard it is for most people.

Also I have issue with the "you need a really good pop up else you won't catch any waves" idea. That's not true for beginner or intermediate surfers at all, there are tons of surfers having loads of fun with a bad popup, some of whom especially the olders who will never do a proper pop up again due to back issues. Paddling is the only true essential and even that can be hustled with good timing.

Fast pop ups are needed on fast waves - lower tide beach waves, for example. But there are plenty of waves that allow a slower pop up

I sometimes surf a point break that is mostly a longboard spot (jaffa knows it - the one named after a totally different sport they play nearby) and there are lot of older surfers there who do 2 or even 3 stage pop ups. But the wave lets them, it’s a slower rolling wave rather than a pitching wave - they wouldn’t manage it on a beach wave.

So overall a fast pop up means you can take advantage of the wave, all waves. Slower is limiting, but you can still get up and have fun if you pick the right spot /tide

Sometimes if you have a mellow takeoff you can use a slow and timed pop up to enhance theorist bottom turn into an almost 180 degree bottom turn, a more advanced technique but feels great!
