Waikiki or La Saladita or somewhere else?

Postby nooshie » Wed Feb 19, 2020 1:23 am

Looking to take a few days off (about 4 or 5) once I finish a big project at work. I'm thinking of either going to Waikiki or La Saladita. I will probably go sometime between mid-April and mid-May. I will probably be traveling by myself because my sole focus will be surfing.

I surfed Waikiki back in May of last year and LOVED it. Yeah, it was crowded, but the wave was amazing and just the right size for me (2-4 feet). It was pretty much offshore every morning throughout my entire stay. Is there a certain time of year that the offshores pick up for this region? I know the south swells really don't start until May but I'm not looking for anything major in terms of wave size. Just relaxed longboard waves and warm water.

I've never been to La Saladita but as a goofy footer, the wave just looks amazing to me. I wonder though if it might be too big in April or May? It seems to pick up around this time. The combination of an unfamiliar break and being in over my head (literally, haha) doesn't sound like a combination for success but the appeal of riding a super long left where I can get some good practice in sounds terrific. It seems like winter (Jan - March) is probably better for what I'm looking for when it comes to La Saladita but I can't get away until April. Also wondering if this area of Mexico is OK for a woman traveling alone? I'd probably arrange a stay and hopefully, pick up from the airport with one of the well known hotels at the break but maybe better to travel with a buddy to this area?

Any thoughts on either of the above spots or another spot that's within about 5 hours of Southern California would be most welcome.

Thanks!

Dude, you have to try Boca de Pascuales, fly into Colima. Cheap hotels and food, great surf, good vibe, very rustic. Great for single traverler, just make sure you lock your door while surfing since I heard they like to take shorts and stuff from the rooms, but it's minimal problems. 2.5 hours from Tijuana, and the aiport is 1/2hour from the beach. $50 car ride, or $5 bus ride.
