Hobie PSD

Postby Jeffdrisc » Sat Jun 23, 2018 8:20 pm

Hi, I just got a used 9' Hobie PSD. I am going to ride it as a 2+1 & was hoping to use a Jeff McCallum 8" flex fin I bought from captain fin for another board. Is the fin too big? If not, what size side bites would work best with this fin? I'll be surfing knee to shoulder high US east coast beach break. Thanks!

1) Is your Hobie PSD a hand shaped PU/poly or Molded Epoxy Surftech ?

2) Is the sidebite plugs FCS ? Do you have GL or GX sidebites currently ?

It's the tuflite epoxy & has fcs plugs. Fcs G5 side bites with a 6.5" fibre glass fin co center fin came with the board.

Well,if you want to run an 8” center fin, I would go with GL sides.
But try it in it’s current configuration with the 6.5” and G5’s. I think that’s closer to the set up Phil Rajzman used on his own Hobie PSD Tuflite Surftech to win the World Longboard championship on.

Thanks for all the info. Going to give the 6.5 & the G5's a try. Really appreciate it.

Dragging back old post like it's 2018!!

Jeffdisk if you are still on here how did you find the g5*6.5 set up?

I've just swapped for a 9,0 psd and it has a 7" hobie fin so thinking of sticking in some g5 copies I have... Did you find it too draggy/ sticky as it seems like quite a lot of fin..

Don't just ask Jeff, you also need to ask Phil.

Anyways he'll show you his fin set up at :37

Hey man, I Iiked the G5's with the 6.5" center fin for waist+ waves, that were a little steeper & a little faster. Waves we get in New England during hurricane season & winter. I preferred a more traditional, single fin log for the small, mushy waves we get in the summer.

What he does at 37 sec is is nuts. TBH i am blown away watching the pro longboarders do their stuff; the short arc turns, airs, supermans etc seem bonkers on a longboard yet they still sem to be able to get their style on. The only way i would get to do that thing at 37 would be to get disorientated after a wipe out and start paddling backwards......

The board came with a 7" Hobie dolphin and GX sidebites so will try those first. Also have some bigger hexcore G5 copies but seems like quite alot of fin.............let the testing (and lots of falling over) begin!!!
