When Waikiki is flat

Postby RobSF » Fri Oct 25, 2019 10:04 pm

It would be about right that on my first visit to Hawaii, at 61, the water’s going to be flat. Tagging along for a conference, and the plan was to surf while my spouse sat in an airless conference room. Now it looks like I might be just . . . floating.

If it’s completely flat at Waikiki, does this mean there might be a spot on the North Shore that’s surfable for an old man one rung up from a kook? Is there any break up there where locals won’t take my board away and give me a wedgie?

Otherwise, I hear the snorkeling’s also a blast . . .

Snorkel, yes! Fish, yes! Respect local Hawaiian culture and heritage, yes! P.S. you may find it's better to watch North Shore than to actually surf it, given your self description. Be sure to visit the Queen's residence ("castle"). Lydia Liliuokalani was the last of very few monarchs reigning on US soil. Truly hope you enjoy. P.S. do not take natural artifacts home with you. This will anger Mother Pele and misfortune will befall you.

All good, might be worthwhile reading how the USA came to annex Hawaii an how it became a full state, which may answer why so many native Hawaiians feel displaced! The palace is amazing, you will appreciate your surfing beginnings if you go to the Bishop museum too!
