November surf beginner/intermediate

Postby squashedtomato » Wed Oct 09, 2019 10:11 am

Hi all
I’m an intermediate surfer looking to use up holiday in November. Surfed for a few years, paddle out catching green waves beginning to do turns etc. Have about 3 weeks to use and don’t mind a long flight. I’d be flying from the uk. I’ve not surfed a huge deal this year and am a bit rusty. I’m looking to go somewhere (ideally on a surf trip/camp) where I can progress but also have a fun more relaxed fun sessions. I’m a female and would be travelling solo so safety is a bit of a consideration. Looking at maybe aus or Costa Rica. I’ve also seen a lot of recommendations for the canaries in nov (not sure if I’d want to be there 3 weeks though!). Any suggestions would be welcome. Cheers!!

Costa Rica is a good choice. Or perhaps Morocco, which is set up for what you want; or even Sri Lanka (bit less organised)

Although I’m australian, it’s a long way to come and November isn’t the best month for surf. It’s ok but still a bit cool temperature wise. Plus there aren’t that many surf camps here - there are definitely organisations that run surf trip for a week or so; these are usually aimed at backpackers and less experienced surfers (albeit that they can cater for better surfers) and that doesn’t quite seem what you are after (then again, for Australia you can just run your own trip bunking down in Byron Bay or something and see the country as well - it will certainly be enjoyable)

Bali or Lombok are also possibilities but it’s the start of the wet season, which usually means all the rubbish starts getting washed down into the ocean and it can be quite bad. So if you are thinking of those areas do some research

There is always Hawaii as well

Hi there

depends on how long your going for and if you would be happy to surf cold water. as DTC said Sri lanka is a spot with plenty of schools/camps set up and the water is warm (30 degrees ish) so no need for a wetsuit. however its a bit further to travel.

then you have west coast of europe. cold! but great surf. South coast of Portugal. cold but only 2.5 hrs to fly to and very cheap in comparison to the rest of Europe (I live there).
Morocco Cool temperature. there is actually going to be a mobile surf hotel traveling down to Morocco from southern Spain and takes people of all levels on tours (i am not affiliated with them at all). if you need to know anything about these guys feel free to PM me.
wherever you end up going have fun and be safe. The Algarve (Sagres in particular) are extremely safe, but then i am biased :o)

Ps sure Portugal is great this time of year! I used to go all the time and am keen for a change. I learnt to surf there and found the water freezing in summer. Even in my 5’4 not sure I could hack the winter!
