Skating to help longboarding?

Postby scrubitkook » Sat Aug 31, 2019 5:36 pm

Hi everyone!

I remember reading somewhere in the forum about skating helping with surfing. I got myself a steal of a deal on a Carver board (Point Break model) with CX trucks. Had it a few months but am only now thinking about using it.

For you skating folks, are there any moves I can practice to help me with my longboarding? I'm not really sure what I can do to maximize the benefits of dry land training. I think I remember reading somewhere that skating might be more beneficial for shortboarders? Maybe I imagined it. I'm a total skating noob with very basic abilities, but, if you've got advice, tips or tricks (well, maybe no tricks), I'd love to hear them!

Thanks!

For doing snaps and blowtails, maybe that was that short/skate connection. But for using a Carver skateboard as a "training tool"for longboarding, it's great just to weave from one side of the road to the other and back. That is to help you roll from you inside rail to outside rail and back. Which is hard to do with a 9 foot rail but needed to turn a longboard ( or any board )
So find a nice empty road/street/park/basketball court and go from edge to edge , one side of the curb to the other side of the curb. ( if you need to push off to get speed, fine )
Find out how many times you went to the edge, be it 5 times, 10 times , whatever number. Then work on increasing that number which means more and progressively tighter and tighter turns.

Just found these two photos of a Carver with CX trucks in action.

( photos from Eason's Photography in Taiwan )

You can see in the cropped photo how the CX trucks allows the deck to lead and then let the truck drive through. Unlike what loose standard trucks will do.

Another good truck for carving is Gullwing's Sidewinder "double trucks". But they don't drive the board forward and they make the deck higher up off the Ground.

Thanks for the reply and pics! I really like that dude's stance. I see it with a lot of skaters, but I think I'm lacking in flexibility or something because I can't seem to bend my back leg like he does. Guess I better practice yoga in addition to all the other things I have to do to get better at this surfing thing!

Hi,

it seems the whole world is in love with the carver skateboard.
However, in my experience as a later in life beginner and longboarder, for you I would -also- suggest something different.

I find the Hamboard 6'6ft to be very, very, very longboard like.
You can lean and carve a turn, you can cross step on it, you can pop up on it, do a lots of moves, and it feels very similar to surfing.
A friend of mine has a Kauna Creation big skate, but I swear it's not the same. That one feels like just a big skateboard.
The size, the weight (it's heavy!) and the trucks of the Hamboard make it another experience.

I think it is a very good training for your longboard surging experience.

I've yet to write a proper review, but this is are my first impressions:
