hello dudes.

i am from south africa and recently started surfing. What I want to know is how often do you have to strip your board of all wax? I surf only on weekends at the mo. so lets say 8 times a month. And in really cold water if that makes a difference.

oh and yes. this is a n00b alert!!

You won't necessarily have to change it that often. It can depend on how much you put on in the first place (sometimes you can revive a wax job w/ a comb). When it's looking dirty and nasty, or is pretty thin and not real sticky it might be a good idea to take it off.

wax

Postby makai » Tue Feb 21, 2006 2:43 am

i use the sun method to get most of the wax off. then i pour flour on the board and remove the excess wax with a cloth.

i leave it in the sun then use a wax combe, but if your gunu sell the board i always polish it up with a bit of white spirit, now to much just to make it look new.

Just curious, my board has dark marks on it (I'm assuming dings as it is a used board) and is looking a tad "yellowish", not too bad, but you can tell it's not nearly new. Anyhow, is there any way at all to make it look cleaner and have more of a clear look to it? Also, what would be the best way to remove the residue from a sticker that was taken off? It looks like at the tip where my Rusty emblem is there was a sticker at one time and the glue is still on there.

Also, is there anything I should do as far as the rubber grips on the tail as far as cleaning or maintaining them?

(Yes, I'm one of those noobs that just HAD to buy a shortboard as my first. And to think, I haven't gotten to use it yet and Virginia has VERY FEW waves worth even calling waves. I am going to pick up a longboard this winter though)

Nothing you can do about the yellow color it's in the foam from sun exposure.
Not sure about the "dark marks" w/o seeing a pic.
Might be able to remove the sticker residue w/ nail polish remover or acetone, but don't use too much and make sure you wash it off right away when your done.
I've never had a deck pad before, so no help there.

You'll be very happy w/ a longboard in VA.

Hey, I just leave my board in the sun for a while (not long since i live in oz!) and scrape off the wax with a wax comb.
Seems to work for me.

Sun for a bit to soften and comb off sun with dry beach sand till it wax transfers to the sand and brush off with your hand, wipe with cloth and rewax. It's that simple!! If your gonna put a pad on (new board- clean with windex or so and dry it and swab/clean with alcohol wipe dry with paper towell and stick pad down,wax,done.- Used board heat, scrape, sand on top, brush off, then use charcoal lighter fluid on a paper towell clean all area for pad wipe dry with paper towell wash with windex dry it and swab/clean with alcohol dry with paper towell, stick pad, rewax, done.

if you're putting a traction pad on and you already have waxed it, you need to use some sort of citrus based cleaner to get all the wax residue off. that wax remover in a bottle is a rip, just buy goo gone or any other citrus cleaner. i rarely ever use it though. usually just scrape then re-apply. you can also use sawdust to scrub the wax off, like the sand method

Yes saw dust is a kick azz way to strip wax !!! WD-40 takes off all sticker residues and warm soapy water removes WD-40 I steer clear of goo gone goof off and acetone only use that shizz when I'm making boards, not cleaning them.
