Surfing Uluwatu in January

Hello
I wondered if anyone could advise me in surfing Uluwatu in January. I’m a goofy beginner/intermediate. I should add whilst I’m progressing on the wave my pop up is still lousy (Learnt the wring way and trying to rewrite my brain!)

Any help would be much appreciated

Well we have people here who can speak more knowledgeably about it but as far as I know Uluwatu is not a wave for beginners

Its not a beginners break. If there are waves of any size you will just be scraped across the reef in pain, probably struggle to even get out and will be run over/will run over by the crowds unless you have good board control.

Although, that said, in January there may be no waves whatsoever so you might be ok ...

I surfed Uluwatu in October with a school and the waves were really good for beginners. There seem to be mixed reviews for January. Looking at the report it looks ok. The internet, however, can be slightly confusing with lots of different opinions!

There are at least three other members here who are from Bali so maybe they can weigh in on it. From what I know it’s a shallow reef break and even those who are good surfers get coral cuts so I figured when it’s small it will be even shallower however you say you surfed there as a beginner then you have more information than I do

I find a School going to Ulus amazing, I can just see you all going down into,the cave and out through the coral heads. Then scrambling over the Reef depending on the tide and current. I'd hate to have to figure which student was being washed where!

If you are able to get a day of surf there in January, I would advise you to go to a more user friendly beach , like dreamland or stay on the Kuta stretch, if there is any quality about Ulus in January, and you are not good at popping up you will be a hazard to yourself and other surfers.

I am a capable surfer, i have had inspirational,surfs and absolutely humbling full scramble for survival surfs there, once I missed the cave on going in and had to allow myself to wash towards Padang Padang and climb a cliff ladder with my board and walk a long way back along the roads.

Just because it is a name Surf, like Pipeline, Mundaka , Kirra etc, get your abilities up before they become a bucket list item.
Please go somewhere more in keeping with your abilities, not being capable in pop up = beginner not intermediate.
Harsh judgement , but the Reef would be harder.

Haha, I should have been clearer, I meant the area! I think we went to dreamland. I was also thinking of Bingin beach. No way would I be surfing that reef!

That‘s OK. The whole area is called the Bukit peninsular, and most breaks are experienced level only, but everyone Rocks up,with hopes!.
Get yourself a book called Indo Surf and Lingo by Peter Neely, a lot of answers and where to goes in there + conversational Indonesian.
Good value. You can buy it in Bali and maybe on line!

It all depends on what time you go with the tide and obviously where in uluwatu. If you can get out earlier before the highest tide, you'll be able to get some of the good waves. You'll also know when the waves get to big for your comfort and skill level.
