This is interesting too (from this article) https://www.livescience.com/48744-how-d ... -work.html

Nerve endings are dispersed throughout the muscle and tendon, and if a stretch doesn't feel safe for the muscle, those nerves will fire, registering pain and resistance, Thomas told Live Science.

These nerves "will say 'you better stop stretching, because if you stretch further, the muscle will maybe get damaged,

Basically the article states that when we engage in stretching, we quiet the nerves ability to warn us that we may be overdoing it. We are just training the nerves to be OK with that amount of stretching, like dampening the warning system.

I agree OMS, probably dynamic exercise is the way to go.

I'm going to continue looking into this. I see a lot of conflict as usual whenever I research these types of things...but if I look at the sources and who is actually citing good robust studies (no anecdotal) I can usually suss out some fact.

I'm no fitness guru, this is all fairly new to me.

I only know what I do and I am not an expert on exercise but I developed this set of exercises without any input from anyone else just based on how my body responded to it and my desire to stay fit and as limber as possible in my old age. So like everything else I say on this forum you should all take it with a grain of salt. :)
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I try to balance 6 forms of exercise regularly

1.) Surfing whenever I can, very best exercise for surfing of course.

1a.) Yoga—creates balance in body, and in life to allow me discipline to keep with this entire list, not to mention the physical benefits.

2.) paddling when waves are not rideable. Great muscle memory exercise and let’s face it we are always doing it .

3.) body weight core work, land pop ups, balance moves, surf specific movements, indobaording in 1 20-40 minutes workout 3-5 times a week.

3a.)weightlifting: it keeps metabolism firing, as the lbs can be a struggle for me. It also helps prevent injury.

3b.) cardio. Run 3-5 times a week 10-20 miles total.

4.) skating. Good for the mind and imagination/creativity. Strengthens legs. I have a longboard and a carver and just ride what I’m feeling.

5.) I will also occasionally play basketball, but at my age it is tough on the entire body

I started surfing at 30 on a 10 foot board and had many ups and downs, mostly downs, until I added in tons of consistent fitness. After I started a regular yoga practice my surfing and fitness have consistently improved. I now ride a shortboard thruster (at 38) thruster and catch a lot more waves than I miss and am adding more maneuvers and skips each time out. I get up at 445 on work days M-F and handle most of it then before work, then I do one activity after work most days. I have weekends off unless I surf or body needs yoga.i was once 5-7 280, now 5-7 175-185 range for several years. Surfed as heavy as 230. No fun.

I've been traveling a lot lately. Exercise and its benefits has been on my mind for awhile because I'm engaged in it a lot. Anyway, I was looking for something to read in the San Jose airport and discovered an excellent issue of Scientific American at the airport. It cost me $9, but it was worth it for the article shown at the link. If you're looking for information on human evolution and its relationship to exercise, then go out and get yourself a copy. It's worth the read.

Unfortunately humans didn't evolve to work relatively inactive 9 to 5 jobs. That's okay because evolution will result in the those most fit for the conditions surviving whatever the conditions are.

There it is. When I slalom steeper hills on my longboard, I have to crouch through turns and the muscles in my back leg burn. Skating helps with strength and confidence in the water. Best of all it's not exercise...like swimming laps...it's fun!
