Priorities and Surfing

Apologies to Surferbee for highjacking the post:

surferbee wrote: A few months ago I was talking to a women in the lineup that I knew, and I asked why her boyfriend was missing out on the good conditions. She said he had to work, but added, "It's better when we don't surf together. He gets too competitive. Then, I get insecure and my surfing turns to xxxxx. He starts mansplaining and telling me what I should be doing differently. I get annoyed and embarrassed and paddle in. He feels bad and paddles in, too. Then we both feel bad. It's bad all the way around. Much better for the relationship if we don't surf together."

I am lucky that my wife loves surfing as much as I do. If there was any "fights" in our relationship, it was over me telling her to go on a wave and she didn't go because she thought she couldn't make it.
Me- " You have to trust me and just go !"
Her- " But what if I wipeout and get hurt ?"
Me- " I wouldn't tell you to go if I wasn't sure it was okay TO go."

But all that's changed and she charges bigger waves than I do. She doesn't get to surf as much as I do, so when she gets a chance, she really goes for it.

So much so, when I proposed to her out in the ocean in Waikiki, she saw that a wave from coming and said "just wait, I'll be right back".
She caught the wave, rode it in and then paddle back and said " Yes ! " ( For a moment there, I thought she was going to paddle in and that was that ) I guess a true surfer has their priorities straight.

You must have got it right because if she had blown her takeoff . . . things might have been very different :D

That is why I tied the ring to a floating keychain, just in case she wiped out or if I was so nervous and shaking that I would drop in the sea.

Wkk, thats a great story. No one in my family surfs, so I dont have to worry about upsetting them. Well, not while I'm out there, usually only when I get back to shore and realise that my "1 hour surf" took 2.5hrs

That has to be the best marriage proposal story ever.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

From my perspective anyway. Just perfect. My proposal was rather random, I didn't have a ring or get down on my knee or anything special. My soon to be wife had just told me her family was coming from the east coast to visit. I just sort of blurted out " Since they are all going to be here we might as well get married while they are all here." You know just the practical kind of guy :) But she used to surf with me back then and now she boogie boards while I surf.....well actually she walks the dog while I surf and I walk the dog while she boogie boards.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.
