It just isn't that complicated.

I guess that means the chip isn't affected by immersion in water. That's good to know.

Ol' Man,
Big H is saying he has a metal key for the door lock. Some modern automobiles using the fancy electronic keys can be unlocked and even driven with a conventional metal or plastic key. No chip in the keys Big H and I take into the sea.

I can confirm that the blipper style car keys mustn't get wet. A surf shop once convinced me to wrap mine in a bag and stuff it in my wetsuit, but it leaked and I couldn't get back into my car. I did get it to work eventually, by borrowing a screwdriver, opening the blipper and leaving it to try in the sun for an hour, but I wouldn't recommend it! Some cars, mine included, have an option to detach the key section of the blipper to take out on the water - you can then lock the blipper in the glovebox.

Yes....like Jaffa said I hide the EKey in the car. I surf with a conventional nap copy made like Billie explained. Only drawback is no active alarm when doing this.

no proper solutions till now. How ever you do it its wrong

surflocks: invalidate insuring, unsafe, doesn't match with sand, darkness, cold fingers..
key pouches: leaky... uncomfortable..
hiding the key: yeah.. we all know the bad feeling...

Sorry. I do not have a solution but the same question....

i am searching for a solution for myself. Not successful yet unfortunately...

I never take a key pouch again. My Aquapac became leaky due to a micro small cut from whatever... they are simply to
sensitive, even though if the closing system is good... its just a plastic bag..

Never use a keylock / surflock. They are easy to brake and invalidate your insurance.

hey,

yes, nice invitation for every theft. These locks are totally unsafe, easy to break open. Using them invalidates your car insurance. There are videos on youtube. Two minutes and a small hammer. That is all it needs to break them.
Also they do not match with sand and saltwater/salty air. One day you can only open them with a hammer.

I always try to keep the key with me. Unfortunately I cannot suggest a good solution... :?

I don't think it's a great idea to keep doing this, so i'm probably gonna get one of those 20 quid combi lock key safe things, and lock it to the tow loop of my car.....any one use one?...are they strong enough?

not good... they are an invitation to thefts, easy to break, invalidate your insurance, dont match with sand and saltwater...
plus try open them with cold, wet fingers..

Hi Big H,
it works perfectly till someone breaks into your car and steels it with the key that you left inside the car. Then the insurance will not pay for your loss...

hm..

First of all, what are you on about with all these key posts? Are you selling something? I can't figure it out.
Second of all, they would not find the keys inside the car. If someone is going to break into a car to steal something they would be in and out rather quickly since the glass breaking would attract attention. Besides, even if they had an hour, they would not find where I hide them inside the car, I promise you that.....besides, why would they be looking in the first place? Who would assume that there was a spare key INSIDE a locked car. Lastly insurance would pay, why wouldn't they? Break in is a break in, stolen is stolen. If this is a big issue, then just leave the electronic key at home and drive with the key tied up in your boardies. Really not the conundrum you're making it out to be.

Uncle Jaffa has the key to it all I just merged all the posts on this key question into one topic, go to the bottom of the page this has discussed over and over. As you will see by all the related threads.

I do not want to sell something (except my mother in law) and I also did not mean to annoy anyone. I am actually just asking if someone has an idea that I am not aware of.
There are many post to this topic- so I just took part in the discussions. Since we travel a lot this IS a big topic for us.

Concerning the insurance:
Modern cars have an assigned amount of keys for it. If your car gets stolen the insurance will ask for the keys.
If you cant provide them they will not pay for your loss. As simple as this. This is a fact. I can tell from my own experience. :!:

So the trick is make more than one copy of the key? Yes they are expensive but it's better than losing out on insurance. I've also never heard of insurance not covering for stolen car if you don't have the keys.

Hi all,

I think this is a solutions that would work for us (if these folks get their funding going..). I think its a smart solution.
and might be of interest for the participants of this discussion... a hard case for car keys. More robust than pouches
and safer then locking up or hiding the car key.

Cling film has a 100% success rate with electronic car keys (provided you wrap it properly). Just stuff it in your arm/pocket/whatever.
