Oh man, I wish I started surfing at 32 rather than 35! :D

Sweetie, I’d kill to be 35 again. It’s all downhill from here on in!

I always hear from my 40-50 year old friends that they have to stop surfing shortboards and move to longboards. Man, what do I do then? From longboard to ironboard? Every time I do my laundry on Sunday it reminds me of surfing and I think this is my life. Holding the laundry basket on my waist and another bag feels exactly like holding a surfboard and my surfing bags down the beach.

Haha, I started two years ago at 49. What would I give to have started at 40 8). I am actually much fitter than I have been at 35, but nowhere near where I was as a teenager. Especially flexibility and speed are not the same.

Good evening everyone, so today was my 8th day of surfing and I know for sure I'm addicted to surfing! I'm able to make much more sections now but I find that I'm unnecessarily paddling alot for waves, especially on small days, which literally killing my arms. On bigger days I'm able to catch about 90% of the waves i paddle for, bottom turn, slightly awkard top turns back to the pocket etc. But on smaller days as much as i paddle for the waves I can't catch it and I don't know where it will break. And even if i catch it the whitewater always catches up. Should I try a longboard for smaller days? I have never ridden any other boards except for my current board and I'm afraid I might lose the feel. Some older surfers have told me to stick to my board, at least for a few months or until i hate it. They didnt believe me when i said i started a few days ago! Anyways I'm a very competitive person, and I know I have only 0.1% chance of competing on the QS but I just like to give myself motivation to be better! And maybe who knows? hahahaha Thanks everyoine!

Part of surfing is learning to read the waves. It is very important in progressing. There are three major variables in surfing, the surfer, the surfboard and the wave. You can work at building fitness and balance for the surfer part of it and learn to use the board you have and the waves you have but if you surf different waves then that changes the equation and likewise if you change the board. The surfer you yourself will change as you learn and that will change everything. I think it's a good idea as a beginner to not switch boards often or at all. The lining up for a wave with a longboard is different and it won't help you ride your current board which is more difficult to lineup for waves. If you want to learn easier switch to a longboard but you will have to learn a lot of stuff all over to go back to a shorter board. It seems to me that lots of people are happy with learning to surf using a lot of different boards but from my own perspective it makes learning a lot more difficult. So you can't keep the waves form changing and you don't want to keep the surfer from changing but you can keep the board from changing and if that is the type of board you want to use then learn to use it.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.
