No style points to be gained here..

I forgot to mention that when still prone when accelerating, I use my hands and body weight to steer into the clean face so I don't end up too deep in the white water where you cannot make the wave anymore. Also sometimes it is still possible to do a jump popup but other times this just feels impossible (why? Maybe the legs dragging at speed in the water?) to do so I then resort to the chicken wing as only(?) way to get up.

I hate doing the chicken wing popup because it puts such a big strain on my groin, an old and still sensitive injury. Now I think of it, that injury was caused by surfing my old Dominator when I was often propelled still prone and had to do a chicken wing..

I have ridden waves completely prone and had bodyboarders tell me "Good wave!" LOL I guess sometimes there is just too much going on to stand. I have ridden waves completely on my knees as well and with one knee up and one down. I used to ride waves in all those positions so it ain't no big deal to me.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I sometimes ride the last wave prone 300 meters to the beach, because I then feel too tired to do a good popup. Riding prone fast ahead of the white water is great fun, you can still do some nice turns. Also sometimes when the crowd is too thick and it looks too dangerous to risk losing control during popup I postpone the popup, navigating prone thru the pack. But if possible I rather get too my feet first for navigating the speed bumps.

I think what happens is that if you miss the window where you start to drop (as some surfers put it "the board falls out from underneath you"), you find yourself into the trough of the wave with a lot of downward pressure pushing down on your body, making it near impossible to spring up to your feet.

Even on small waves there is a moment of free fall where there is time to pop.

This is why it's tougher to do dry land pops - there is no free fall. But you can still train your muscles to pop up without your back foot.

I do not teach the Chicken Wing as it leads to the crawl ( clamber ) up on the deck. Then the beginner loops out backwards or misses the wave. BUT sometimes I ( just like Tudeo ) do a chicken wing.......... in certain circumstances.
Learn the proper basic first THEN you can start mixing things up. In golf, shanking and hooking are a bad thing. But I've seen Tiger Woods do this incredible shot by SHANKING on purpose. Doing a chicken wing can be part of your repertoire, but shouldn't be your go to move.

Yes! If I bomb the take off timing I also see it as a way to goof around and try something silly - like ride sitting down with my feet out front or try to get up switch foot. Why not?

It's a little more than goofing around as I can actually steer the board relatively well from all those positions but you can't beat standing up without having a paddle in your hand for maneuverability. I will usually popup if I am not busy maneuvering the board from the position I am in but I get into critical places and can't get out before the wave is done due to not being able to maneuver it quite well enough from those lower positions..
