I don't consider that video as "small waves". I thought we're talking about ankle-biters / shin high crumblers ?
But if small waves is waist / chest high, then check out this video. ( check out the slo-mo at 1:21 )

He surfs to the power in the wave always keeping the board in the part of the wave that has some power. I guess though that will come with understanding waves
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Contrary to #4, the videos show a lot of riding from the BACK with quick steps forward for trimming and nose riding. The surfers stay in the pocket using the wave’s power to support their position on the back and the many opportunities to maneuver.

After a bottom turn, I usually trim and ride mostly on the front third of the board. It’s fun and cruisy but when I step back for more than a quick turn, I lose the wave. There's not enough power on a knee high shoulder to support riding from the back. The videos show that it’s especially important for small wave riders to stay in the pocket. Think I’ll work on it.
