Can't decide where to go, Mexico, Costa Rica or Panama

Postby Guest » Mon Jun 20, 2005 9:29 pm

Hi all, am busy planning a surf trip at the moment but keep changoug our minds where to go. I've been doing some reseach on the above countries and watching a few surf DVDs such as South America Drive thru etc to try and get some ideas. I've only been on a couple of surf trips so far so am still fairly a beginner and don't fancy surfing reef breaks yet so am after a reasonably easy beach breaks. Am planing on going in Sept/Oct time and wanted to make a bit of a road trip out of it (possibly buying/hiring a van for a month). As well as decent surf would also quite like a lively nightlife (went to Kuta last year and thought that was pretty good). I was thinking of maybe flying into San Jose (Costa Rica) and then driving down to Panama and going to Bocas Del Torro. It does say there are some beach breaks there but am worried that surf would be flat that time of year. Then possibly head down to the Pacific. Anyway got a good road trip or could point me to some breaks to do some reseach on to help plan this trip. Cheers dudes.

all are awesome places to go, and you can still score good surf in sept/oct if everything goes right.
I would probably pick costa rica out of the 3, but mexico has some fun places too.

That pretty much rules out Panama for you. Great surf on the pacific side, but also mostly reef breaks.

If you go to SanJose to go to Bocas, don't get a car. It's very easy to get there by bus and boat. It's not far, and in bocas you don't need a car at all. Dug outs will take you anywhere.

If you, like me, leave Bocas to get some good surf on the pacific, deffo get a car. But then again, the best spots (santa catalina and around) are all reef. I'd say go for it as the waves are worth the risk. Bring booties if you want, as they are hard to get down there.

Anyways, I'd go for Mexico. Don't know how much time you got, but if you are looking for a bunch of breaks and some road trippin'; Mexico is better than CostaRica (a very small country).

I recommend cabo san lucas, at the tip of the baja peninsula. its a badass place with tons of fun stuff to do in town. I learned how to surf there and love it so much. maybe its just me but its really nice. If your gonna check out a plave there look at Costa Azul just search it on google and their site will come up.
