It depends on the wave shape, size and speed, but something occurred to me today when I was out this morning. It was a small day, shoulder high on average with some smaller and bigger ines mixed in, 13sec period which is weak for here. Everyone who was getting any kind of ride at all (all shortboarders out) was popping up and immediately hitting the lip, then dropping down and pumping out of the bottom turn....It has been something that I've been working in and was pleased that I was pulling the move off. The smoother & cleaner I (or the others) could do it, the further out onto the face I could get where then I had options.

That makes sense. It seems like staying in the upper third right after popping up makes you go much faster. At least I've been noticing it recently.
