Can't decide between Firewire Submoon 8'2 or a pro surf SUP

Hi,

I am a good surfer wih 20 plus years surfing experience. I mostly ride 6'0 firewires but looking for a new board for summer sheety waves. I originally thinked of a Firewire Submoon 8'2 (60L more than my other boards in the 35-40L range). I'm tired of not being able to catch more waves in the summer and want to add something bigger. Also I'm considering a pro surf SUP (8'4 x 30 and 120 Liters). What this community of experienced surfers think about this and what do you think will do best? For better waves I have the boards needed.

There is no point getting an SUP unless you want to SUP. If you want to SUP then forget the other board.

I'm 6ft/165lbs, use Submoon 8'2 and very happy with it. I also use shorter Firewires Was at the Ripcurl shop last week, they told me the 8'2 size is the bestseller.

Consider something else maybe....I have an 8'2" fungun with around 55-60L I would guess...8'2x23x3+(?). Paddles really good, catches everything and is a lot more progressive than my 9'2" performance longboard. Looking to get another shaped in a smaller size....considering something like a 7'2" x 22 x 3.5ish....up to the shaper (Kimo Greene) but around those dims. Here is some of the eye candy....the red and white is my 8'2":

The ahi model is what I'm considering with the stinger-esque tail. What I like about this board is it is a true all rounder, waist high to as big as I dare. Aipa makes a big boy stinger model which is similar and available off the rack.

If your waves are on the softer side and don't jack too fast, consider andominator in a large size. I had a 6'8" in 50L and that was good fun in fatter soft conditions....if hollow at all it was no good at all....wide tail hard to control.

On second thought my 8'2" is probably closer to 65L....pure guessing anyway as it is a hand shaped custom with no dims written anywhere.

I narrowed my search and discarded the SUP option. Know I'm toward a Submoon 8'2 or an Addvance 7'6 that has 69l of volume. Do you think will be too much? Remenber I have also a potatonator 6.0 (40 L) and another firewire with 30 L of volume. I want a summer board for powerless a fatter waves.

I think you are focusing too much on volume. Look at the submoon and the addvance shape and rocker etc and between the two I think there is a clear 'winner' for less powerful fatter waves. And it's not the addvance.

There is a reason why longboards are shaped like they are and not like the addvance.

Did u look at the new Firewire Chumlee? I read a lot of good things from people who tried it and it's aimed at exactly those waves. Also it's build in their new Helium Tech, even less weight then FST, that sounds promising too.

Yes looked at the chumlee but I also have a sweet potato that is very similar. I took dtc comments and decided go for the submoon that will let me position closer to longboarders. Now I'm deciding between 8'2 or 8'7

For my intermediate skilled 165lbs the 60L 8'2 is perfect.

Why is that? I would think the thin nose and tail of the submoon will make wave catching more difficult and wouldl also expect it to be less stable??

Surface area can be just as important or more important, particularly once you are at a high volume already. The addvance has a pointier nose so will be less stable (for example, try to rock a ruler back and forth on a table and then use a wooden spoon. Although they will be about the same max width, because its narrower at the tip the spoon will be less stable). Obviously less stable = easier to turn. As I always say, everything is a tradeoff. Wider nose is generally easier paddling.

The addvance also has a continuous outline (ie its continuously curving) where as the submoon has a bit more of a parallel outline (its still continuous - more than a standard LB - but not as severe). So a bit more speed, which is good for gutless waves

There isnt an enormous difference between the submoon and the addvance, but there is a difference. For what the OP wanted, out of the two that he shortlisted, the submoon is (in my opinion) definitely the better choice. Which is not to say the addvance cant do the job perfectly well, but for the specific requirements its not the preferred.
