VW Transporter Conversions

Im interested in buying a VW Transporter to transport all my gear around in etc, and I was wondering if anyone knows of or can recommend someone or a company that does conversions?

Most of the well known companies take the van when its brand new and convert them then, rather than second hand vans

What are you looking to do to it? Convert it into a camper, or simple board storage?

If its a camper you're after, then you'll easily get a secondhand one (not cheap though), but if its for board storage, then you can easily rack up a shelf/tie-down system yourself, and leave space for a mattress so you can bunk down overnight

I want to be able to store all my gear (surf board, mountain bike, climbing gear etc) as well as sleep in it and cook in it. Is it possible to get the flooring changed to laminate or something so I can hand up my wet gear? Do you roughly know how much conversions on second hand Transporters cost?

A 'proper' conversion done by a company like 'Devon' or 'Westfalia' will cost several thousand pounds (and Im not even sure they'll do them on second hand vans)

If I were you I'd do one of two things....

Either get one thats already converted - I've got a T25 and it makes surfing so much simpler, and so much nicer in winter.

Or
Get an unconverted one with wooden panelling on the inside (lots of them have got this) which will be really easy to put shelves/racks in and the floor can be laminated straight onto the floor panels.

As for the cooking, get a largeish wooden box that'll take a gas cylinder and a large camping cooker and put the cooker on the box when using it (and drill a hole for the gas tube), then you have an easy to store cooker

If you are refering to the link I posted for Ambro Conversions, I posted it in good faith in response to the original request for information. I too am considering purchasing a VW Transporter for carting all my gear around having struggled to get 4 bikes and the camping gear for 4 into my Subaru Legacy this summer. And no, there wasn't any room for my climbing gear either, despite the climbing @ Baggy Point being excellent.
I have no connection with Ambro. Sorry if posting links to other sites is a no-no on these forums.
I think Claire may find what they offer useful and very good value. I can't afford a brand new VW either.

DoO it yourslef it so much more fun about a third of the price and its so satisfying once finished :)

If you need a tryly blank frame to start on you can get pre-fab. frames for the inside then go on to creating your ideal set up bolting things accordingly. Authough I prefer insulating and then panneling as this countryies isn't exactly known for its warmth.

Yeah was mch needed after i stupidly drove into the back of a lorry with a tow hitch!

Its top notch cheers dude, wacked a load of 'back to black' on it and its good as new! £10 to SAS was done plus i finally renewed my membership at the same time so £20 in all :p

If you're still looking for a van I've one for sale. It's a '95(M) 1.9 diesel swb. with a semi camper conversion - ie double bed in the back elevated over storage areas for cookers, food boxes, wet box and surfboards.

Dunoo if you'll be back to see thuis but how much was the re-spray after you'd treated all the body work?
We're looking at having one done and I'll be doing all the treating and bodywork prep.
