Glass cracking.

Hi. Need some advice on my 7' 6 custom mini mal. Had it for about a year and its been treated well. Trouble is the glass is cracking on the top and bottom. Noticed it has leaked a bit of water near the tail. Cracks seem to be getting worse the more i us it. What can i do about it. HELP.

a good place to look is www.swaylocks.com. ask away over there, everybody knows whats goin on. my board is goin through the same thing. if its been leakin water on the tail, youve gotta dry it out and fix whatever is leaking. if youve got some basic knowledge on fiberglass repair, you can put down a little more hot coat(or gloss coat if its glossed). if not, take it to a ding repair guy. shouldnt run you more than 50 bucks.

Thanks Tomcat. Do you think the whole board will need re-glassing as the cracks seem to be all over? Seems like it may be to big a job for a diy. Any one know a good repair shop (thats cheap!) in mid or north Devon? Looks like the original glass is not flexable enough.

i have heard that you can get a can of clear acrylic spray, like Krylon Acrylic, to seal where the cracks may be leaking as a temporary relief. that works for a while, but in my case it seems that the hot coat has become very brittle over the years, so you continously have to repair it. but if you are going soon and cant get a ding repair guy for a while, you can spray it.

Cheers Tomcat. Might be a stupid question but whats the best way to dry it out. The cracks are very fine. Heard that you are not suppose to leave boards in the sun for any length of time. THe board is only a year old and as you can imagine i aint that happy.

If you take the board along to Second Skin in Braunton (near Croyde) they'll pass the board along to their fixer, the name of whom escapes me right now, and he'll fix it pretty cheaply. It's all done cash-in-hand which keeps the cost down

I had several dings repaired there when a board met a car in saunton car park and it was fixed lovely for 20-odd quid

well, if the cracks are letting in water, then they are letting in air, in this case letting out the water vapor. hopefully it doesnt have too much, but just let it sit out of the water, with the cracks at the low point of the board.

Thanks again Tomcat. Surfs flat at the moment so it won't be so bad staying out of the water for a while. I have left it stood up with the wet spot at the lowest point. Hope it drys out quick. I will check out the shop in Braunton and have a chat with them. Thanks Drowning.

sarge, just wondering, did u manage to check out the second skin chappy in braunton?
I have just bought my first board and have some problems, (see my post) and saunton sand's beach is where i will be going to surf so if you could update me on what happened, id really appreciate it!
