Renting a board in California

Postby mylesjj » Tue Jun 20, 2017 5:51 pm

Hi,

One old fella from the UK is travelling over to California next month for a three week road trip. I'm traveling over with my family and therefore can't be bothered with the headache and expense of flying out with my 9'6 log. Can anyone recommend places where I can rent out a decent log (no foamies please) for a couple of days? I am traveling down the coast from San Fran and will be stopping off at Santa Cruz, Monterey, Laguna, Dana Point and San Diego. I will be in Orange County for 5 days.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to California, Myles.

The only place I've rented in the area is in Pacifica, just south of San Francisco, and I only ever rented foamies there. They may have some epoxy boards, too, but I don't remember seeing them. You shouldn't have a problem finding places in Santa Cruz, though, that rent hard boards.

Yelp might be useful for you. I haven't rented from Freeline, but I sold a board on consignment there. The people who run the shop are friendly and helpful. Have fun on your vacation.

Billie's list is amazing, and I'll be referring to it myself the next time I head south. Note that the Log Shop in Pacifica is, alas, no longer with us. My boy skated there, a friend painted a mural on one of their walls, I got my first surf lesson through them, and my heart was broken when I saw they'd closed down a few years ago. NorCal and SonRise are both still around, though, and both good shops with good folks.

Perhaps that list should be a sticky? I don't know how to do that!

Wise, by the way, in San Francisco, is mentioned in Barbarian Days. For years they were the city's only surf shop, and, I imagine, a place many people scratched their heads staring at as they walked by, looking out at the furious tumult of Ocean Beach waves and then back at a store that sold surfboards to go out there.

Thinking, "Seriously?"

Ocean Beach will slap you around, but she does have her charms.

Shark situation doesn't seem to be improving in SoCal though!
