Went up to Bolinas with the whole family Sunday to surf in 2-ft waves. Quite gorgeous, and even my wife got on a board for the first time in over a year. A small sea lion followed her around for a minute, trying to figure out what, exactly, she thought she was doing. It was fun being out with my son, too, who's kind of stingy of the time he wants to spend with his old man lately.

At lunch later on, my wife mentioned that Father's Day was getting close, and the kid started looking sheepish. It turned out he'd been thinking it was Father's Day. We laughed. "You've got one more session with me, kid."

My 1st thru 4th grade students, boys and girls, always do activities together. The 5th and 6th grader boys won't even pair or line up with a girl ( and vice-versa ). I told them "I bet in a few years, you'll be wanting to be next to a girl". But right now, they don't understand. It's a phase, he'll grow out of it.

There is nothing greater than time spent surfing with the ones you love. One can hope the children will learn to enjoy these times also. I guess that is the dilemma every surfing parent runs into make the kids surf or only when they want to?

My kid is almost 21, home from college, and though he loves his parents, we're no longer in the top tier of social engagements. (For some reason, he prefers people his own age . . . go figure.) He doesn't read this forum, though he wouldn't begrudge me crowing about my early Father's Day present.
