Is this shortboard fit to me?

Postby Lustmonk » Wed Mar 08, 2017 3:30 am

:ninja:
Hello I'm shortboard beginner in Hawaii.
I'm 5'9" (176cm) , 136 lb (62kg) , 24 years old.
I bought 5’7 x 19 1/4 x 2 1/4 , 27 L volumes hand made shortboard.

Actually I can ride 9 ft fun board.. but I never tried shortboard. Do you guys think this surfboard is too short for me?

Yup, why did you buy it? Seems like a board for a grom. Have you tried surfing it yet, how did it go?

Most likely yes.

1) Where are you planning to surf the 5'7" ? On the Southshore ? Diamond head ?
2) Have you been surfing the 9 footer at Waikiki ?

The 9'0" is over 3 feet over your head. The 5'7" is two inches shorter than yourself. Do the math. It's going to be way harder to paddle and catch waves.

Oh no.. it is really hard to catch waves. So I try to search some tips on Youtube.

And I'm going to surf at Diamond head.
And also tried 9 foot board at waikiki too

Listen carefully , no matter where you surf at your level, 5' 7" is not a board you can use, you won't catch waves, if you do it will be an immediate wipeout. Go long until you can develop some skills and knowledge. Stop deluding yourself that at this stage short is for you. :D

Waikiki is a very easy to catch rolling wave, not much current and not too far of a paddle. Life Guards - YES

Diamond Head is a more peaky, harder to catch, lots of current plus side wind, reefy and quite a paddle to get to the break. Life Guards - NO

Don't paddle out by yourself. Please surf with a buddy. ( and hide your Slippahs ( flip flops ) in the bushes, they'll get stolen if not )

There is a world of difference between an 9' and a 5'7. Going from a smaller to a bigger one is much easier than the other way around. I think it was a mistake and you will discover it by yourself unless you are really talented. Your new board is probably half the volume and triple responsive than an 9',
