it sounds cool, and i think people would buy it just outta curiosity if nothing else. i am still a beginner by far, but i think it would be neat to try and build a surfboard, learn about the different shapes and what shape does what, etc. stuff like that. would this kit be only the instructions or would it include materials? or maybe what materials to use/ where to get them? i have done some research on this and found that the biggest cost in trying to build a surfboard is the shipping of the foam blanks. if you coulod find some way to cut that down a bit you'de be golden. good luck.

yea, cheap shipping on blanks would be all you need.... mabie establish a clark foam distrubitor in popular cities... like San Antonio

HI, To create a complete package which would enable somebody to make a surfboard from scratch with n prior experience. You would need to include detailed instructions on surfboard design, such as what each part of the surfboard does i.e rocker, length, width, tail, shape, fin set -up etc. Information on how to create a template in-order to shape your board, either by taking a template of an existing board or by creating a brand new template. Detailed instruction on both shaping and glassing, as well as on how to make the stands on which the board will be shaped and glassed on. You must also consider the tools required to shape a board, and the materials needed to glass the board, as well as the blank. The instructional material would brobably need to be in the form of a video or a dvd, as it can be very hard to follow written instructions about such a visually orientated process.

There are some companes which sell starter kits, including the blank (which can be pre-shaped) and the equipment needed in-order to glass the board but i havent seen a kit which includes everything you need, as i think to include everything would be vey expensive, both in terms of actual purchase price and shipping.

Shipping sucks! It cost too much. There needs to be a local place to get the blanks for cheap. That is one of the many reasons for building your own board. Check out steve brown's web site, it's got everything you need to know. Shots

omg...making boards takes so much time and effort! screw that...you mess one thing up and the whole board feels wierd. my friend has made a few and they all suck! I don't think i'll ever try making my own board. just buy one when you can save up some dough every once and a while.

i think it sounds like a great idea. ive always looked for a cheap way out like this, but no cigar. i'd pay at least 200 bux for it..

I think its a great idea, Once of corse its easy to use and there aint that many confusin names and stuff. Sounds like it would be good fun. I would pay about $150 - $250 US once it had everything i needed to make a standard board. Maby i would pay some more if it was really worth it.

I Think that making your own surboard is an awesome idea if you have the skills to do it. It makes the board much more personable. One thing that you should difinatly include is directions on a DVD so that instead of people reading how to do it, they can actually see it. You should also include some decals for the board, for people who aren't that artistic. I would spend about $300 on a good kit. Some people probably have some tools already and fiberglass, or foam. so you should send the customer a checklist of any items and how much they need.

Yeah i would buy it cause i'd be curious to try it out. Board kits cost from $130ish up to $240ish or more, so I'd probably pay $100ish? It probably should include fiberglass, leash cup, maybe fin boxes or fin rope.

There was an article in my local newspaper a couple of months back about a local shaper who lets people build their own boards at his shop. It's pretty expensive (about $2,000 or more) to do it, but you can always ask questions and get advice from the shaper.

I think this would be a great product.
I am in the process of building my first board and its suprising what little info is out there.
One of the problems I am finding is that any guides I do find explain how to do things using terms that only shapers know.
A list of tools and what they do would also be great.

There's all sortsd of info out there on surfboard making. I shape and glass al of my boards and most of my friends as well.
Good places to start are www.swaylocks.com and search the archives and another must are the shaping 101 and glassing 101 videos. They show absolutely everything you need to know to make your own surfboards. Tools, materials, tips everything. If you can't find these vids let me know and i'll see if i can help.
