Surfing in the US!

Hey, I live in Indiana and have never surfed but I want to go surfing soo bad. Anyone know where the closest waves would be at? I'm going to Panama City Beach, Florida this summer...does anyone know if those waves are big enough to surf? I have no clue what size they have to be! Thanks to all who reply
