questions about riding wavestorm

Postby LAsurf16 » Sat Nov 05, 2016 8:20 am

Hello!
I guess you could say I am a beginner-I have been surfing in LA for about 6 months, mostly el porto. I can get out, stand up and go down the line, and I have walked up to the m on the wavestorm board, but other than that I can't do much.
Anyways, I have two questions about surfing and surfing with a wavestorm:
1. Is it possible to actually nose ride on this board?
2. when is it a good idea to start riding larger waves, especially with the fall/winter swell coming into SoCal? I managed to get out in 4-6 foot surf, but chickened out and decided to go back in without catching anything (saw some dolphins though  ) how dangerous is beachbreak in head high to overhead surf anyways?
I'm still a grom, so my parents decide what board I get- and so far the only thing they have been willing to get is a wavestorm , so don't tell me to get a smaller board :D .

Welcome to the world of surf, the wavestorm is just right for now, work with your skill development , in small chunks. Respect your limits but stretch them too. Bigger requires nor competence, and a wider range of skills.
Get to surf your wavestorm well and keep talking with us, helpful hints from both our experienced and learners abound.

Young means learning easily.
Watch your beach and learn all the things that make it work in different conditions, maybe get some lessons to enhance and improve what you are doing. :D

There's always danger. Even when you think you're perfectly safe, you're not. Never turn your back on the ocean. In my opinion, the greatest danger comes from fear. If you don't feel comfortable, then either surf inside or just watch other surfers or find another place to surf where you can have fun. There is no shame in admitting that you just don't feel like you're on it that day. There will be other days when you feel like Kelly Slater. The second greatest danger comes from fatigue. If you're exhausted and too far out to rescue yourself easily, then you're in danger. The third biggest threat is lack of knowledge. If you don't know how shallow it is, what a rip current is, how powerful the forces in the water are, how to exit and enter, what your emergency plan is, and a whole slew of other things, then you put yourself in danger. The best defense against the dangers of surfing is to avoid them from the outset. Know your limits. Have the courage to hold your head up high and let people know when you don't feel up to the waves. Surf with friends. Respect other surfers' limits--having to rescue other people can put you in danger as well. Have fun.

Get comfortable on smaller waves then gradually increase size in small increments. Also get comfortable at a spot in the lineup then go a couple feet deeper into the lineup until you get used to that then another couple feet deeper. The ocean is a dangerous place. Even with minimal waves there can be currents and other dangers. At head high you can break your neck if you land wrong.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

YES. Getting a full "ten toes over" though, a bit hard,

Are you actually WALKING or are you SHUFFLING ? If you want to get good at noseriding, you have to learn how to Cross-Step.
Question. How do you know you get to the "M" ?

When you are building a surf skill set all the basics are the skills, bottom turn to top turn, cut back , how to make your board speed up how to slow it.
develop these skills both back hand and forehand!
Time = how long is a piece of string, but getting as much surf time as you can without selling off the rest of your life, and believe me you will know when you are competent in each aspect and what are doing feels like something you can do each time.

BTW you are welcome to ask this on the open forum there are some very experienced people there and a couple are surf coaches .
Besides the answers to your question may help somebody else , we all have gone through the learning process.
Cheers from Australia Jaffa

I surfed at El Porto more than 100 times and speaking mostly from my own experience and that of my friends
Just don't go when it is that big or stay in white water (in this conditions, it is big enough to enjoy a ride):
1) most likely, wavestorm will break (it may survive 2-3 sessions but that's it) advanced guys smoothly ride the ws even in bigger waves but they break them anyway
2) big waves coupled with rip currents can make you so scared that your progress will be adversely affected for months to come
3) other surfers won't be able to fully control their boards and some unlucky accidents may occur.

Bay watches offered me their help many times. All the time I refused but almost always I had regrets afterwards. But two times they dragged me out notwithstanding my protests:)

I broke three boards and some ribs at El Porto, to say nothing about cuts and lacerations:)
Albeit, there is el Porto spot closer to el segundo near the rock chain which is safer and has smaller waves. Try that one but beware about rip current and rocks. Once, I got pushed on them but managed to climb up and ended up with minor fingers and palms cut and minor damage to my wetsuit and the board. I was more traumatized by super angry female baywatch yelling at me for ten minutes in a row.
