John John, Medina, Toledo .......... Before some of these guys were even born, Christian Fletcher was bustin huge airs back in the 1990. Listen to what he says at 1:08, the future is now reality.

( and his boards wasn't 5'8" )

so was he mainly a skater trying to revolutionise surfing?

cause from what i read he is a skater loving surfing or vice versa and wanted to bring the skate to the surf.
ofcourse he allready surfed.

ontopic he seems really good. and it kinda answers my stuff that i was propogating that skating does matter in this.

and for that ill like your post

edit;;;;

everything matters.

his surfboard from the look is taller and heavy. and i love how he airs without pushing a small hidden ollie motion like JJ does.

What I like about Fletcher is that his airs are stylish.

Sure, Filipe Toledo can do 360's rotations on every wave into the flats, but they still look pretty rank. I'll take a huge straight air over that twirly stuff every time.

"Surfing is a personal thing and you shouldn't let others put you down for doing what you want. "That is the best part of that video. Too bad Fletcher got caught up in drugs. Who knows what he might have done if it weren't for that drain on his health and psyche. He may have popularized air maneuvers but I am sure they have gone beyond what he could do. I think if you made a video of Florence, Medina, or Toledo it would be much more spectacular especially in the ones that are actually landed.

It must have been the 1980's when one of my surf buddies came back to Kauai after spending some time in the military. he was telling me about guys doing airs back then. I asked him how did they keep their feet on the board? We were postulating things like straps or velcro booties LOL

Maybe it was the mid to late 70's now that I think about it. This friend also told me about snow boards and doing tricks in bowls like skateboarders were doing in pools. All this stuff was unheard of back on Kauai. We were quite a few years behind the rest of the world

It wasn't skating versus surfing back in the 80's in Socal-- it was both. If you lived near the coast you would skate and surf and if you were stuck in the "lnland Empire" you generally skated. I remember my friend's mom screaming at him because he kept doing hand plants on the back of their couch when he walked into their family room.
