Choosing the one!

Postby Ritchie » Tue Oct 04, 2016 11:43 pm

Hi guys! :)
I need your help to choose my first shortboard!
I now surf for 3 summers in Portugal. In this summer i've been riding a 5'11 from "Torq" and i felt pretty well!! Now i want to start to do some cutbacks and some other things, but i need to find a surfboard..
I'm a girl, I'm 55Kg (121pounds) and 1.65m (5ft 4.9in).
Don't know if you can help but...
Thanks!! :)

You probably have the Torq Mod Fish 5’11 x 20 3/8” x 2 1/2” at 33.2L. Just get something with less dimensions, like a 5'9"-5'10" by 20 1/4" but more pulled in nose.

BUT........... why is it that you can not do Cutbacks and other things on the 5'11" Torq ? Best if you learn proper technique to turn your current board, not spend money.

Volume is the "new" thing, which most "old timers", who rode boards before computer aided designs came about, don't care about to much. You have to look more at the total package ( rail, rocker, bottom contours, etc. ) If you do need to know, there are many Volume Calculators from most surfboard makers ( Channel Islands and Lost are quite popular volume calculators ) But be honest about your fitness and skill level when entering your info.
You still won't explain the "other" things you want to do with a shortboard. Airs ? Floater ? Tube rides? I don't see why you can't do that on your current board. I am nearly your size 5'2" 125lbs and use a 6'4" Fish built very similar to the Torq you have.

You're trying to find the right surfboard. But think about it like trying to find the right guy. Why look for "the One", when you got a perfectly good man already at home.

Waikikikichan yes I want to ride barrels, some more close cutbacks, floaters, (airs I think i can't do yet but I would love to, obviously!)
I was just asking about the volume because everyone seem so "serious" about that.
About the rest of the measures thanks a lot!

Hi, Was just passing through and saw your post. I would recommend something like a xanadu swift or maybe a lost mini driver. I would go a little larger than the stock dems for your height. if you are 5'4 i would surf around a 5'8 if you are at the intermediate level of surfing. This is give you a board to grow with and very capable of advanced surfing. This is the shorter wider kind of board. I own both and are great for barrels and get into waves nice and easy. Hope this helps.
