Down at Kalapaki Bay there always seems to be at least one "Overexcited Foreigner." They're on vacation and want everyone to celebrate with them! I try to avoid talking to them, as they tend to hit on me and try to rope me into mai tais, even though I'm at least 10 years older than they are, am married, and am just surfing until it's time to pick up my kid from dance class.

Upside: they dont care if you surf right into them.
Downside: they are unconcerned about surfing right into you.

We have an older guy who comes with his daughter to ride the summer waves. He walks onto the beach in a zipped up wetsuit while she carries the board, umbrella and picnic lunch. (I've been meaning to tell my daughter "That's how it's done!")

He grabs the board, paddles out and has a blast...belly rides, knee rides and cheater fives. After a wipeout, he sports a smile and says "Let's get the next one!" He may ride every wave straight in but he's my hero. :claps:

I think Big H pretty much nailed it with his list. I always refer to "bobbers" as "chum". Or, "speed bumps" if they're on the inside. The only other one I'd add to that list is The Wrong Tool - the guy who struggles with the wrong board for the conditions, constantly pearling the longboard in jacking surf or trying desperately to paddle his shortboard into mushy rollers.

BoMan, this is one of the bumper stickers on my old 4-wheel drive SUV. This SUV is my surf mobile. It may be the only vehicle in Santa Barbara County with this sticker!

Mai Tais at Kalapaki now there is some memories..... I hear Kalapaki is like a party wave unless it is good and the better surfers are out.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Yeah, Kalapaki always has a degree of newbies on 10ft rented soft tops, all getting on the same wave. It can be fun, except that since I'm smaller I tend to get mowed down on busy days like saturdays . Mostly, I'm there on Wednesday late afternoons, though, and then it's usually a couple locals, and one or two vacationers. a few people on SUPs. It's a nice place to catch a few rides if you're stuck in Lihue for a few hours. I've never seen it big, though. Maybe it gets that way in summer?

If you look at the breakwater and the narrow entrance to the bay it seems amazing there are waves at all. It catches south and east swells best so maybe summer is better but it might catch a stray easterly swell anytime. Even at it's very biggest, it's not that big. Biggest I have seen is about 12 to 15 foot faces but unfortunately wasn't able to surf it. Biggest I have surfed there is about 8 foot faces (I used to live in Niumalu.) I work near there and have been tempted to try to go at lunch or after work but every time I check the surf there it is so crowded or small so I haven't been motivated to do that.

Yeah, it's usually shoulder height, and often rolling. Nothing to write home about for experienced surfers. But it's a good place for me to practice as as a kook. :D

I usually sit a bit on the inside when everybody is fighting for (and often missing) the set waves at my local beach break. I just catch the ones nobody really wants and up my wave count that way. I'd rather surf 10 small ones than one good one. I make sure not to paddle straight back out, I go around and then come back in a bit.

I wouldn't recommend this strategy if you can't duck-dive, on a really good day, or a break you don't normally surf, or when there are really good surfers out. But at an average xxxxx beach-break, I think it's better form than shoulder-hopping.

Machado (not making a comparison here) was well-known for going for scraps.

Theres a video where he showcases his surfboards and u see him riding a wooden surfboard with no fin. and he rides it like it has a fin. its a longskimboard lol. gotta love that man

He is so good I read one writer who supposed that he becomes bored riding standard equipment.......here is one of his famous moments....this was a big enough deal I heard about this even as a non-surfer when it happened:

BTW he looks pretty comfortable in a stand up barrel at pipe....and check out how long the boards are.

Those boards are beautiful, I don't know if it's just me but I'd rather have a longer gun than a wider one, something about having that long rail to set in the water seems great, if I ever get a stepup board, I'm going longer :D
