Surf Cam

Postby Hugo » Mon Sep 26, 2016 12:49 pm

Hey guys,

Not sure were to put the question sorry if it is on the wrong forum section.

I'm thinking of buying a waterproof camera to take on my surf sessions, so I can film myself and my friends surfing. Any advices on what the best price/quality cameras are there outhere???

I already know about the gopro4, but it's way too expensive for my budget (it costs around 500dollars here in portugal same as the minimum wage lol) :P any advices on cool lower prices camera would be very appreciatted...

Thanks.

Polaroid cube? Failing that, buy some cheap chinese clones gopro from ebay. I can't say whether they are good or not though.

there's plenty of GoPro clones on Amazon...and clones of clones. Just read the reviews, make sure you get the same product in the mail as what is described. I'm pretty happy with a camera I paid 60 dollars for 2 years ago and which can take GoPro accessories. (not the case, the camera usually comes with its own waterproof case, but everything that fits on the case should be compatible with the GoPro).
I think the main differences between the clones and the GoPro are the inability to record at high framerate , lower resolution (but plenty for your needs) and the sensor is lower quality, but, again , plenty good for action footage.

For surboard mounts, make sure you wait 24 hours after application before you hit the water. A tiny leash with its own mount is recommended, and an orange floating sponge to glue to the back of the case. All these accessories are really cheap online and usually big bundles of different mounts and accessories can be had for less than 20 dollars on Amazon.

There are a number of genuinely waterproof cameras point and shot models in the the big name ranges , Canon, Olympus, Nikon not sure what they cost in Portugal but they need to be genuinely water proof but they can shoot both still and video. They don't need housings and they don't have fixtures to mount on a board. They have variable focus and so can shoot the full range of shots at a quality like this, On an Olympus 1030SW 10 MP tough so an older one. 10 meters depth safety. The newer ones produce better quality shots.
Is there a Portuguese Ebay equivalent?

Secondhand could be the way to go, if buying that way make sure your camera will be compatible with your computer. good luck :D

I went there twice! It is very good, the paddle is horrible when the waves are overhead. You can use the rip to get out but it is too scary as it is close to the rocks.

Peniche has some amazing surf and many unexplored spots. Definitely one of the best I've ever been.

Good to know all the details as we were discussing about purchasing the knock off one on Amazon the other day.
