New Surfer: Tips please! (Pictures included)

Postby tuantran » Sun Sep 18, 2016 9:13 am

Hi all,

Just recently completed a beginners surfing course in Bali, Indonesia.

Please could I have some general tips to help improve my surfing (pictures included).

Is there anything I can work on in terms of posture, positioning etc. Anything you can think of? Thanks :)

Middle picture - left hand on left side of board, right hand on right. Not both on the same side.

Bottom picture = standing too far back on the board slowing up about to pop the board up and out from under your feet and you about to fall backwards off the back! Typical beginner mistake as is the middle photo previously commented on. But, hey, it's a start

Exactly this or else you end up looking like this

Hands above the rails gives you more control so you don't tip over and fall when turning

We've all been there
Not bad for a beginner so far :D

It looks to me in both pictures you are too far back on the board. Being too far back slows you down because it lifts the nose up and that causes the board to push water instead of glide over it. it's pretty normal beginner pictures though
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

In all three photos you are looking straight down, keep your head and eyes up, look at where you want to go. Practice shuffling your feet forward and backwards so you don't stall the board or nose dive. You will have to adjust your feet and your body weight as the wave changes shape.

Nothing another 150 hours in the water won't fix.....head up like Namu said, and don't stand so tall like in the last photo on a wave that size....get that butt down more like you were in the second photo, but all that will come, and realistically, on a "wave" that size you're just practicing your popup more than anything, but again, practice keeping your eyes and head up and keep that forward hand outside the other rail so that you have one hand on each side of the board, not both hands on one side; never, EVER look down and you'll be on your way.... other than that just get out there and keep at it....make catching "green waves" a goal and get after it!

LOOK Down, YOU go down. You eyes lead the action. Look up and out. Don't look at your feet, I promise you they're still there. Don't look at the nose, it draws you head, neck and torso to it, making you bend forewarn. Keep your head over your butt. When you get more advanced and starting bottom turning, you look right to go right.
