should I upgrade my foamie?

Postby jconblack » Thu Sep 01, 2016 12:36 pm

Hi guys!

This is my first post on the boards, although I've been reading you for a couple of months. All the info that I've found here has been super helpful so far.

I started surfing on march and until now I've had like 25 sessions. My first sessions were on a surf camp riding a foamie, and after that, back home I bought a Decathlon - Tribord 8" foamie, which I've surfing until recently. On this board, I'm able to popup quite succesfully, and I'm starting to turn to ride the face of the wave.

Last time surfing I had to rent I board, and I used a 7"6' NSP which felt great, but also a little bit harder to surf for me. I could ride a lot of waves, but I had a couple of wipe out on a couple of waves which were faster and bigger than the rest. So you could say that the board was a challenge for me.

So, obviously, I started thinking on buying a similar board. Do you think I should move away from the foamie to the funboard, knowing what I'm able to do on it right now? Or do you think that I should keep going with the foamie?

Thanks a lot in advance,
Juan Carlos.

I think it sounds like you're ready, especially if you're starting to turn to ride along the face of the wave. If you feel like you can handle your board in the water now from a safety perspective, I'd say go for it! The sooner you can upgrade (and still have fun), the better.

Good summary in that blog link

There is no reason to stay on a foamie if you don't want to (the time to buy a new surfboard is 'when you think it sounds like a good idea'). The key is to buy a good choice board about the same length as the foamie, give or take a bit depending on your weight etc

I'd have to agree and just say go for it i was in a similar situation not long ago, i had a foamie that i could turn on and felt like there was nothing else to be learned so i bought a 7'6" funboard and its awesome so much more versatile and fun to surf than a foamie for sure.

You're ready, go for it. You should keep the foamie too. It's good for teaching newbs and you can always take it out on small days(I've had some fun sessions with foamies on days where most probably wouldn't bother to even paddle out).

Hi again guys,

I just wanted to thank you all for the advice, and also tell you that I finally bought a second hand 7'6" NSP funboard from the surf school where I normally surf!
They are renewing all the gear in the school, neoprenes and surfboards, so it looked like a good opportunity to get the surfboard for a good price. The board has 2 small dings that I will repair asap, but other than that, normal wear. I paid 190€ for it and I couldn't be more stoked about it.

So thanks again guys!
Juan Carlos.
