It could be that he grew up there and has been doing this since he was a kid gradually working up to that size of surf. Lots of exits and entries to the ocean are only made possible by very good timing.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

here is the full version - where you see him jump in...but it might be as old man says, he knew what he was doing - only an idiot who was then also drunk would have jumped in randomly, surely

Awesome, that looks like what I was talking about. Timing in and out. He probably grabs something under the water while the wave is coming in.
