Fins for tight turns

Postby Hammy » Fri Jun 10, 2016 6:56 am

Can anyone recommend specific fcs fins that provide alot of pivot for sharp turns?

Probably need a board with that, the fins you need would dependent on the board, size, shape, rail shape and your skill. Tell us about the other components and there might be prescription set for you.
So you know what we are talking about. Read the fin primer too, could help!

Hard to say without first knowing what FCS fin set up you're currently using. What are they ?

Currently on a tri fin thruster lost sub-schorcher. I am using standard fcs plastic fins and finding they are doing long flowing turns.

There are 4 different models of sub scorchers , swallows with wings, hybrid and all different lengths............ I'd choose a similar fin in size and dimensions without the flex of plastic.
That amount of flex spills power in the loss of energy to the flex.
Are you skilled enough to drive that sort of turn? If you are not able to generate speed and power prior to initiating the turn, it ain't the fins!

Still haven't answered the question yet. And what is the "Standard" plastic FCS fin ? The M-5 ? What is written at the base of the fin ?

G-1000 ?!? Someone your size should be using M-7's. Below that is M-5, then M-3 ( like my size ), then the grom fin M-2. The G-1000 is even smaller !
Plus if it's the old Black plastic, even more flexy. I would recommend you go to a local surf shop that has the FCS TEST DRIVE fin tree. You can borrow a M-7 ( or some other wiz-bang honeycomb/carbon fiber fin in Large ). Should make a big difference. If you really need to spend money, K2.1 fin is made for tight in the pocket, beach break surfing.
" The K2.1 Performance Core Fins have an upright template designed by Kelly with a smaller trailing fin. This is what Kelly rides in beach break and barrels and is ideal for tight turns and high performance in the pocket surfing.
But I think it has been replaced by the "V2" model, since Kelly has his own brand of fins now.
