cut outs what do you do?

Postby oldmansurfer » Sun May 01, 2016 7:49 pm

I recently started doing more cutouts where I turn back to face the open ocean and lay back down on my board. This is what I used to do on many of my cutouts long ago before I quit surfing and restarted. It got me thinking I probably have done a huge variety of cutouts repeatedly in my life. I will try to list them here and ask you all to add onto this and tell us what you do.
1 Normal cutout: which is what I described above where you go over the top of the eave and stay on the board and just lay back down to paddle out.

2 Fall off cutout: where I turn back out but fall or jump off the board not holding the board. A variation of this is not turning back out and jumping off

3 Fall off under control: turning back out and jumping or falling off but grabbing the board to keep it under control. A variation is going straight in and grabbing the board.

4 sitting cutout: for small waves just sitting on the board and leaning back

5 standing cutout: Jumping off and standing on the bottom for small waves and shallow sandy bottoms

6 beach jump: Ride it all the way to the beach and jump onto the sand

7 Dive off: Cutout where you just dive off the board usually between the wave and the board so you don't get whacked

8 Kick dive: This is one of my most common kickouts these days because the waves I ride often end in closeouts and I try to stay on for as long as I can. I usually kick the board sideways and fall backwards off so my body is parallel to the wave.

9 Aerial cutout: I haven't done one of these since I restarted surfing but this is where you are going fast and to avoid a closeout you go straight up the face and accidentally become airborne

10 air kickout : Similar to number 9 but the wave is closing faster and you try to kick your board out over the top while the wave still hits you a bit. I also haven't done this one in a while

11 Stall cutout. Stepping on the tail of the board to make it stop and let the wave go by. I do this occasionally

Feel free to add comment, joke or ignore
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Beachie I've been going to lately has been standing cutouts where I slap a hand on the deck as I jump off to hold the board.....water at the end of the ride is anywhere from waist to knee deep, sandy bottom. Waves that break more offshore I like #1 when I can.....lately been falling mid ride trying to "do" something, working on things so it isn't an issue...

If the wave closes out or I'm stuck at the bottom of whitewater that I can't get around or in a wave that is going to close out, there is the cutout where you turn hard to the base of the wave and submarine the board and yourself either under the foam or right through the bottom of the wall.

And the closeout tube ride where you just lean into the wave and try to poke your board through while standing up....or the just eat it in the tube cutout

I did that for the first time a few months ago....was surprised how effective it was and how relatively easy it was to do.

Tried it again only on the second time I was late.....wasn't so easy.

I'm still working on cross stepping, so when the wave is right I'll cross step off the front of my board and grab it on the way down. :D

Go one further and try to cross step back to the tail before bailing....might surprise yourself and make it back without falling off....worst case is you wind up in the water anyway.

Usually i just do #3 or #11.But when i get stuck in the white water i just stall the board jump to the side and place my hand in the deck to hold it. My goal for now is go out of the wave with a nice air and jump to the water, hope i get good waves later this week so i can try it, last time when it was good just achieved a exit with almost a little jump need to pump a bit more speed upwards ;).

I saw a kid yesterday do a rocket air that was like 10 feet in the air.....he didn't land it but he put a crick in everyone's neck. :)

long ago before the days of leashes I was surfing Hanalei on an 8 foot day (about 16 foot faces) I was trying to get down the line on this wave but could see a huge section that I wouldn't make coming up so I went straight up the face. My board caught on the lip and just cleared the wave and lay flat on the ocean but I went up about 15 feet (no leashes in those days) I could see I was going to land on my board but really while in the air there is nothing you can do to change your trajectory so I tried to make my feet miss the board but my heel clipped the rail and made a huge ding there cutting my heel in the process. To make matters worse when I came in and met a friend on the beach, I was going to show him the ding but I guess my arms were tired and the board slipped from my hands and the single glassed in fin hit the ground and cracked. The only good thing was that was my secondary board (but my tube riding board)

When I'm in a faster wave and it is about to close out I jump off my board as high as I can into the air and back over the wave, sometimes it's the most fun part of the ride!

I am doing a tail stall cutout. Where I push on my back foot causing the nose to come up and the board to slow way down allowing the wave to pass under me. Then the board starts to sink and I bring the nose up and grab it and lay back down to paddle. It is similar to a tail stall for getting tubed except way stalled and not getting tubed :) I noticed John Florence in the ongoing contest at Winky pops turning back through the whitewater and sinking the board down under the water the he casually checks his watch and brings the nose up and paddles away. Not saying that is what I do but if my board had one tenth of the volume then it might look similar  John has incredible skills but I did notice that cutout. He does stuff like that that looks so easy but how he controled the board through the foam and stayed over his board was incredible. http://www.worldsurfleague.com/posts/248037/florence-still-has-his-freak-on

At low tide where I surf the rocks are only a couple of feet below the surface, so I make a large point to cut out in the same way you do. I also avoid doing foamies and other risky stuff until there's more water under my feet.

This is the one I see pros do a lot in surf contests
