If there's one thing I really hate it's inconsiderate longboarders; yep, sorry if this fires some of you up but hear me out on this one....

Why is it at our most popular main break here whenever there is a major swell running all these fat arrogant chaps who surf 3-4 times per year turn up on their mals & paddle out, on these longer & higher volumed boards they sit 10-15 meters further out than shortboarders and pick the eyes out of the waves & sets coming through. Most of them haven't been surfing longer than the Longboard revival thing and have never owned or ridden a shorterboard, they do not grasp the inherent paddling advantage they have over others - nor how much easier & earlier they can catch waves on boards almost 4" thick. They think the person first standing has R.O.W. And they get all self-rightous when I (and others) take off on the same wave abit closer to the curl (following the rules). Causes alot of friction here. They make comments like "well son - perhaps you should ride boards more suitable to the conditions" My usual reply is 'I ride shortboards cause I still can'

And don't even get me started on the legrope-less pink wetsuited one *smirk*

I hate it when I check out the line up, way out back, cant really see whats going on, make a mammoth effort to get through the white water and paddle out miles....

... THEN realise that everyone out back is on a longboard and Im wasting my time on my shortie...

Maybe if I remembered to check the conditions from a better vantage spot before getting to the waters edge it wouldnt be a problem, but my enthusiasm always overcomes sense

And you all just know I'm flat-out trying to see this dude somewhere...so I can show Libby....Like spotting a Dodo :-) "Look Honey...theres a Roy"
Kinda like what you Poms call "twitchers" or sommat, you know those mad bird watcher people.

Now on this topic of shortboards V Longboards, my shaper here does a shortboard called a "step-deck", I've got a couple and they're great, looks like a hybrid fish (that's what they are really)...but with a slightly raised/crowned deck under the area your torso/chest lies on for paddling, tapering back to the tail. Sort of like one of those "seven" fish but more obvious. Gives you more volume and it works...provided you have a 14.5" nose or thereabouts I find I can take off on mal waves and beat them at their own devious high-volume game.

The thing I can never understand for a guy who claims to be a liberial, non-voting, counter-culture, anti-capitalism hippie kinda guy can be so damn dogmatic, one-eyed, self rightous & just plain wrong about so many things...
It just doesn't make sense really...befuddled me anyway.

Cheezee that is the best post I've read to date; truely. Brilliant. A big JD coming right up for you my man...

people who harm the ocean

Postby kimmie » Sun Aug 07, 2005 7:05 am

i am not fond of surfers that pollute the water with trash that they think is not going to cause harm if they throw it in the bushes. I dont like fishermen who leave hooks and all their crap in the ocean and sand for us surfers or sea animals to get tangled on. http://www.northshore.com/t-laniakea.aspx has good info about how idiots are harming turtles.

i just dont like people who are not considerate of the environment around them.

A men. I hate people that litter anywhere, water or land. Cigerette butts are the worst. they leave a bad odor and pile-up over time. I think that all the people that die in natural disasters are the liters and mother nature is just getting back at them...

By the way, if you had a family member or loved one who died in a natural disaster, sorry. I just noticed that some people might find that wrong to say...

i hate when people just sit on their boards right in front of you and dont move, and i also hate red tide(when a real lot of thin red sea weed floats at the top of the water)
