my new "W-Entry" model

My new board just got done. It's called the "W-Entry" ( pronounced Double Entry ). It is a Single Fin on one end and Quad Finned on the other end. The history goes, I entered this contest in Japan that had two divisions, Open ( progressive ) and Single Fin Stylemasters. I was not permitted to enter the Single fin division because my board had FCS plugs next to the center box. So I came up with this idea and Carl Schaper worked out a design.

so do you use the leash plug in the front when you are surfing single fin or go no leash?

There's two leash loops. One is thru the box and one is a leash plug.

I didn't understand something though, they didn't let you in because you had the quad plugs beside the center fin plug? How does that disqualify you if you just use the center fin?

The board I was using was a 9'1" Southpoint Bonga Perkins model. It comes as a 2+1 set up with 8" center and GX sides. For the "progressive" Open division I was using M7 sides with a 2.5" center. For the Single fin I took off the side and just put a 8" Greenough 4-A. But when they saw the FCS plugs, they said it wasn't allowed. They wanted just boards with only a center box or glassed on single. ( oh, and taping over or putting a sticker on the plugs wouldn't matter )

Be interesting to see whether the squared off nose has any effect - if not, then we may as well all take 2 - 3 inches off the nose and claim we are shortboarding!

There was a TV program that talked about surfboard designs and this board (or a similar one) was mentioned:

They said the lack of a nose "tip" made the board faster, because there was less water drag on it, if I recall it well. Who knows the "W-Entry" might have a similar effect.

We could've made it more rounded at the ends, but decided on true Double Ender. The concept isn't the tail but the outline and swing weight. In Quad mode, you have a really wide tail fish/egg/mini-Simmons but the nose is so light and flickable. In Single fin mode you got a narrow tail to pivot turn and a really wide nose to nose ride. Look at McCoy Laser Zap compared to the Donald Takayama Scorpion. Two different designs/concepts but look like the same outline flipped around.

Hahaha....I bet you're going to piss off at least one of the officials who are after the purity of the single fin form....but you're following the rules right?! Have you tried it yet? The shaper must be stoked to try something new as well.....bet he's on you for the results.

I'm assuming that the goal was to be able to bring just one board to a contest in Japan where space is a premium and transportation is more of an issue than Hawaii where you could throw a stack of boards into the back of a 4x4.

I can bring more than one board. Just really want to stick it to them. They will probably bar me again. "what fins boxes, those are nose channels, buddy !"

Did try it quad on the first day and it feels really really good under your foot. I was worried the quads being set over the concave for the noseride and that without any "V" between the fins would make it hard to lean over. But it worked unreal. It's not stiff or loose, it feels in control. And with the tiny weightless nose, you can just throw it up back side under the lip and make it, no problem. Surprised myself.

Single on the next day, was just like any other noserider. Big and fat area up front. Tiny tail to sink down and lock the tail. It did paddle better that way I found out.
