Fin setup going down to a 9 footer?

Postby saflyfish » Sat Jan 16, 2016 1:21 pm

Im going from a 9'6 longboard with a 10" single fin dolphin to a 9' semi performance longboard.
I want to go 2 + 1 but have two questions the fin gurus can answer?

1. Should i go 8 or 9" single fin?
2. Style of single fin?Cutaway or dolphin?
3. What size should the trailer fins be?

I realise there are a number of factors involved here but id like to know the one setup you would use 90% of the time

thanks guys

What are the conditions you usually ride in and what would you like/able to do on the wave?

Simple rule of thumb for a single fin longboard is INCH for FOOT. Thus a 9'0" needs a 9" single fin. But if you run a 2+1 set up, you need to take volume away from the center fin to give to the side fins. So a 9" fin with sidebites on a 9'0" board is too much.

You can go with a 7.5 8.0 8.5 inch fins ( it depends on the shape and area )

The side fins / side bites for FCS are usually the GX fins ( longtime ago they used come with the smaller GL ). For Futures fins they usually come with the SB-1 ( sidebite one ? )

Lately i've been seeing more high performance pro longboarders using regular sized thruster side fins as sidebites and the center fin around 6.5".

Question, are you planning to put a tail pad / traction pad on ?

And move the centre fin forward; that will loosen things up.(you probably know that!)
