dehydration

Postby pmcaero » Fri Nov 20, 2015 11:08 pm

Even after a short session (around 1hr) I get so dehydrated I need 3+ liters of water just to feel normal. Basically I can't do any higher thinking for the rest of the day :)
I try to get an intake of liquid before I go into the water, and right after surfing.
Male,35, recent bloodwork came back normal.

Is this how it is for everyone? I can't imagine a daylong session.

Not typical for me. I am thirsty for beer after surfing
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Hydrate as much as you normally would, a good rehydration strategy is to have a drink of half water half apple juice helps hydration levels balance more easily and also enhances fluid transfer across blood brain barrier for better cognitive response.

In tropical climates coconut juice has similar benefits.
Many branded hydration drinks have too much sugar as do sodas so hydrate wisely and have your choice on hand immediately you get out.

Amazingly ordinary fresh water drunk on coming out of the surf tastes so sweet.

BTW if you have good tap water at home use that don't buy bottled water if you can avoid it.
IMO bottled water in 1st world countries is a major scam. Third world countries you may not have choice but dispose of your bottle responsibly. Those countries are being buried by bottles!

I usually bring a sport drink with electrolytes like Gatorade and paddle in once an hour to rehydrate.

I started chugging half of a two liter bottle of pocari which is an electrolyte sport drink. (that's 1 liter for all the math challenged) before going out and I'm fine for up to three hours which is my physical lint anyway. Helps with cramping as well.

I used to play a lot of sports. We did two a days in summer break back before "dehydration" existed as a consideration and the coach withheld water....said it would toughen us up....kids have died from the same regimen....at the same time I can go all day without a drink here in the tropics and while I might be thirsty, it isn't the same as the dangerous condition of dehydration.

today I made sure to drink about a liter of a concoction from a smoothie with OJ and water.
It definitely helped. Maybe the fact that it was cloudy helped too.

I still failed to catch any waves.
