It has nothing to do with your level of gromliness rather your surfing capabilities.
Go watch the lineup for a good while, recognise what you can and can't handle in the wave and the crowd around it.
If your ability means you are going to be a speed bump or obstacle in the line up then be elsewhere.
Practice learning about line ups for boards of all sorts, identify where you sit in the ability food chain. Watch the treatment non locals, kooks etc get and decide whether you want to engage the pecking order.
This is a good policy to work on at whatever age you are, and wherever you are. :lol:
Sadly there will be someone who will try to put you in what they think is your place. The more skilled you are and the more aware you are the less likely that going to be!
