Who here has surfed in NY?

Postby BaNZ » Wed Sep 30, 2015 12:35 pm

New York that is. Either Rockaway or Long beach. I noticed there might be some NY surfers on this forum.

When I visited few weeks ago, I went to Rockaway beach. The subway station is quite a distance from the surf spot. Not many surf shops closeby. I've been checking out the waves on the webcam and it just doesn't look nice for longboards. Plus I don't think it is a great idea to carry a longboard on a subway unless I can find a shop that rents out board space.

I did see some longboards on the day, but mostly funboards. The intervals was short, fairly windy and it is shore break. I already have a 6"3 hybrid that I'm too unfit to use and can barely catch waves with it. Perhaps I'll sell my long and hybrid for a 7"6 funboard. That extra 1 foot should still allow me to get through subway easily. I really haven't got much choice or I would definitely stick with the longboard.

How does the wave in the photo looks for you guys? To me the water is murky and disgusting, it's the ugliest water/beach I've ever seen.

That water does look pretty gross. But water can look a different colour without being actually dirty, it can be plant life or dissolved minerals or micro organisms affecting the absorption of different light waves.

No idea about surfing there. Being America there must be a website and a club!

I would surf there if it wasn't for wet suits and travel required
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I never thought of boogie boards! I should really give that a try too.

Probably just sandy mixed with the water. Depending on tides and wind there can be a whole lot more murk to the water but I'm sure sometimes it can be crystal clear. I wouldn't worry about safety though, there are probably poor water quality alerts to warn people when it's dangerous to swim.

Those waves look pretty good sized considering the distance from the cam. Hard to tell how well it's breaking without a video. Could be closing out or could be reeling. I'm sure like any beach break there are long board friendly days and says meant for shortboards. You can probably go and pick one of several sand bars that is more conducive to longboarding.

There's lots of waves up there you just need to know where to look.
