Indo set to rumble again
It's been a long time between drinks. Bintangs to be precise.

It's been a quiet couple of months in Indonesia, the incredible 'Muzza Swell' is but a distant memory. Since that swell – which hit in June – there's been very few swells of interest.

But finally, heading into the first month of spring a couple of large and powerful groundswells are brewing in the southern Indian Ocean. They're not as large as the Muzza Swell – which was undoubtedly the swell of the season – but they're worth paying attention to.

A strengthening node of the Long Wave Trough is currently moving east from under South Africa and will supercharge a polar frontal progression, projecting a broad and elongated fetch of severe-gale to storm-force SW winds towards Indonesia.

The frontal progression will weaken through the end of this week as a weaker front splits and projects towards Western Australia, helping keep the size and consistency of the swell in good stead for Eastern Indonesia.

The long-period forerunners are due to arrive overnight Sunday in Bali with the swell building strongly through the day Monday, reaching 8ft+ by dark across exposed breaks before peaking Tuesday morning to 8-10ft with the possibility of the odd 12ft cleanup set.

The Mentawai Islands will see the swell kick very strongly later Monday to 8ft to occasionally 10ft across exposed breaks on dark before easing from a similar size range Tuesday morning and further Wednesday.

Moderate to fresh SE trades are due across Bali as the swell builds and peaks, weakening a touch into Wednesday. The Mentawais will see fresh to strong but easing SE trades Monday, weakest through Tuesday.

Longer term we may see another large S/SW groundswell for the following Monday the 7th of September but we'll continue to watch this in the regular Indo forecasts on Tuesday's and Thursday's. //CRAIG BROKENSHA

Just in time for the last day of the Padang Padang Cup waiting period by the looks of it.

Looks like you and Tudeo are in for some surfing!!! I am just reading about rabies in Bali. Is that still much of a problem?
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

There is rabies in Bali, but it's not apparent. There are dogs walking around, some more scary looking than others but they aren't trying to bite you, they are just causally chilling so some of these may or may not have it, it would just be unfortunate.
I'm not sure if monkeys carry it, but the monkeys can be viciuos, they steal things out your hands and if you try get it back they growl at you and show their teeth.
I generally forgot all about rabies when i was there, a monkey did steal my hat so i was trying to get that back and looking back that was a bit silly in case it scratched me or bit me, i'm not really sure how rabies contracts.
But yeah it's all good out there, it just if you come across a crazy animal, or like to annoy animals. We had a dog run into our room a couple of times, that worried us a bit haha, but we shoe'd him out eventually.

I used to know a woman who lives in Bali....maybe it's time to see if she can put me up for a few nights? Just kidding I have no time for travel. Stuck with waiting for waves to come to me.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Just home from great session, one of the best rides of my life, so smooth!

When I parked my car at the (sort of secret) spot and saw the near perfect and uncrowded 5ft waves I got so nervous I locked myself out... Was standing next the car all geared up, key inside the trunk, the waxcomb also...

I went for the surf, and after that was ready to smash a side window, what do u do in the middle of nowhere? Stone in hand the Balinese stopped me, they said better call a locksmith..

20 minutes later the locksmith had the car open without damage.

Only my already so battered ego got another blow for this major stupidity..

I don't know the current status, but rabies is a problem here. I already had 3 incidents I had to go to the hospital for shots, 1 rabies treatment is 3 shots over a period of time.

Couple of years ago I was walking down the cliffs of the Bukit to Bingin, when I stumbled over some fresh dog cadavers. They must have poisoned them cos I didn't see any wounds.

Strange thing is even at the height of publications about the rabies epidemie, there were everywhere dogs walking around. Most are chill, but some of the bastards attack out of nowhere.

A wound means anti-rabies vaccine, unless u are in a position to observe the dog. If a dog is infected u will soon see strange behaviour, like the dog is drunk.

I wasn't aware there was a problem.....

....I taught my daughters what to do if a dog (and there are many street dogs around) shows any interest in them....the distillation of my experience living with and around street dogs in 7 different third world locations:

#1 - No street dogs are to be petted or considered friendly or cute....they are VERMIN
#2 - Most street dogs will head for the hills if you look them in the eye then quickly reach down and touch the ground as if you were going to pick up a rock to throw at them....just the movement, quicker the better, with make them bug out.
#3 - If they do not jet at the sight of you bending down as if to pick up a rock, actually pick up a rock (streets in third world countries seem to be littered with rocks so an actual stone will not be far from the feigned pick up)....pick up the rock and throw it so it hits the ground in front of the dog.....this is for two reasons....you will increase your chance of hitting the dog if you aim in front of it and one hop it in or fly it all the way to the target, and secondly since you will almost never actually throw well enough to hit the dog it will clatter in front of the dog somewhere, kick up some dirt and have more effect than a zinger through the air.

We practice throwing rocks at imaginary dogs....do it out in front of the house to let the neighbourhood pack see their development....

Bali used to have no rabies but a person named Thomas Aquino brought his dog in on a boat. He brought it in against the rules and no one checked. It had been exposed to rabies and began showing signs after arrival and besides biting him and his friend and his daughter the dog also bit some other dogs. Friend went for rabies treatment, Aquino and daughter died and suddenly Balinese people started dying of rabies something like 130 in a year. I am reading a book called Rabid which is a sort of history of rabies. Not quite what I wanted but parts of it are interesting. Parts of it focus on the effect of rabies on folklore and arts. Supposedly vampires and werewolves and zombies come from fear of rabies virus (that's the boring part). Hopefully Bali becomes rabies free once again.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

There was a time 2010/11 if I remember well there were frequent publications, now I don't know. I can imagine government doesn't want to harm tourism.. If ever there is something to worry about go to Sangla hospital, they have the vaccine and are well prepared.

I hope so too. But there's this thing with efficiency here, I've seen this team of Balinese dog catchers running after wild puppies nets in their hands. Just running like crazy until death tired and had to give up to try for another day..
